Damian Barr's Literary Salon

British Council, İngiltere’nin sevilen edebiyat etkinliklerinden Damian Barr’ın Edebiyat Salonu‘nu, İstanbul Tanpınar Edebiyat Festivali kampsamında ilk defa İstanbul’a getiriyor. Damian Barr’ın çağdaş Britanyalı yazar Suzanne Joinson ile yapacağı söyleşi ve ‘Hayatımın Hikâyesi’ teması ile Türkiye’nin önde gelen dünya müziği sanatçılarından Mercan Dede ile gerçekleştireceği keyifli sohbet için bize katılın. 

The British Council brings Damian Barr’s celebrated Literary Salon to Istanbul for the first time as part of the Istanbul Tanpınar Literature Festival. On Friday 1 November Damian Barr will conduct a revealing interview with Suzanne Joinson and will talk to one of Turkey’s leading figures in world music, Mercan Dede, for a special slot called the Story of My Life. It will be an evening of reading, thinking and talking freely.

Oyun evrensel bir kavram. Oyunun çocuk gelişimindeki önemli yeri, çocukların, yetişkinlerin, çocuklarla çalışan, çocuk yetiştiren yetişkinlerin ve en önemlisi çocuklar için yazan yazarların malumu. Peki, oyun çocuk edebiyatında nasıl bir yere sahip? Ya da, çocuk kitaplarından oyunu çıkarmak mümkün mü hiç?

  Game is a universal concept. The importance of game in the development of children is clear for the children and the adults who raise or work with children but most of all fort he authors who write for little readers. So what is the place of game in children’s literature? Or better yet - is it ever possible to extricate game from children’s books?

Her şeyden önce oyun vardı. Oynadığımız oyunları başkaları da seyretsin istediğimizde sinema doğdu. Her film bir oyundur aslında, ama bazı filmler daha birer oyundur. Bilgisayar oyunlarından doğan filmler, oyunu konu alan filmler ve oyun gibi filmler. Sinema ile oyunun iç içe geçmiş birlikteliği.

  In the beginning, there was game. When we wished to make others see the games we play, there came cinema. Each and every film is a game but some are better games than the others. Movies that are adaptations of computer games, films that are about games and films that are playful. The inextricable relationship of films and movies are going to be discussed.

Söylenmeden Kalanlar: Anlatıda Sessizlik / The Things left Unsaid: Silence in the Narrative

Söylenmeden kalanlar bazen daha çok şey anlatır. Yazar öykünün tümünü anlatmayı vaad ederken bile anlatmamayı seçtiği, dışarıda bıraktığı detaylar ile doludur bazen metin. Bu seçim bazen özel hayata saygıdan bazen söz bulamamaktan, çoğunlukla da öykünün içinde, metnin akışını kesen bir travmadan kaynaklanır. Peki yazarla okurun diyaloğu bir illüzyondan ibaret midir? Usta kalem Oya Baydar ve Avusturyalı yazar Andrea Winkler, anlatmadan anlatmanın sırları üzerine konuşuyorlar. 

  Things left unsaid often say a lot. The text is full of details which the author chooses not to relate even when he/she promises to narrate all the story in all his frankness. This choice may result from respect for privacy or lack of words and oftentimes from a trauma in the story that obstructs the flow of the text. Or the dialogue between the author and the reader is an illusion all together? One of the masters of Turkish Literature Oya Baydar and Austrian author Andrea Winkler talk about the secrets of telling without saying anything.

Grotesk Üzerine / On the Grotesque

Öykü anlatıcılığı, gündelik hikayeleri aktarırken okurda acıma, iğrenme, genel bir rahatsızlık duygusu uyandırmayı tercih eder, bunun için biçimin bozulması ve abartılması gibi yollara başvurur. Bir anlatı stratejisi ve bir stil olarak groteskin büyüteci aynı zamanda siyasi baskıların, bulunup kaybedilmiş sevginin ya da genç bir kadının gündelik hayatının şeytanlarını çıkarmaya da yarar. Hollanda’nın prestijli çizgiroman ödülü Stripschapprijs sahibi Barbara Stok, Gecenin Sonuna Yolculuk’un çevirmeni ve yazar Yiğit Bener ve Amerikalı yazar Nicholaus Patnaude, vücudun maddi yönünü ve öykü anlatıcılığının, alışılmış olanı alışılmadık kılma gücünü tartışacaklar.

Story telling can make use of the distortion and exaggeration of the form to present us everyday stories in a way that makes us feel pity, disgust and discomfort. The magnifying glass of the grotesque as a narrative strategy and style also serves the purpose of exorcising ghosts and demons whether they are of political oppression, of love found and lost or of the daily life of a young woman. Barbara Stok, winner of Stripschapprijs, Yiğit Bener, translator of "The Journey to the End of Night" and Nicholaus Patnaude, whose first novel "First Aid Medicine" was published this year, will discuss the materiality of the body in their works and ways of story telling that renders what is familiar, uncomfortably unfamiliar.
