wait. sorry. dean is dying in the backseat and john won't even sit back there with him because he needs to be up front berating sam for not killing him. sam and john are driving and dean is just a passenger.

dean's bleeding out and all he wants to know is if john's okay. he sends sam away from him to check on john. in the same episode as his speech about how sam and john are too ready to sacrifice themselves, about how he'll have to bury them. but he sends sam away because he knows azazel was right when he said sam and john don't need him.

for sam and john, finishing it means killing the demon, at any cost. for dean, finishing it means all three of them safe.

i know that it can't make sense because of plot but ohhhhh it would have been so cool if azazel was actually possessing john the whole time. like he played the role perfectly for months, only to slip up by assuming john would be happy that dean saved sam's life.

john would have broken free faster if azazel was threatening sam.

dean tells azazel, "let him go or i swear to god-" and azazel, wearing the face of dean's god, says, "what? what are you and god gonna do?"

it's called devil's trap because they learn about the literal devil's trap and because john is trapped by a devil but ALSO because john has trapped them all in this life and this cycle of violence
