Philosophical crap:
I figure the best way to prevent that is increased awareness. Awareness of the needs of the other person(s), the context the problem(s) occur in...and awareness of the motives and baggage one might bring to the table.
Of course this can take time, and some situations require acting quickly and making snap judgements. But being there for others requires having THEIR situation in mind above your own. It's a tricky balance and I'm still trying to figure everything out.
