One of the many reasons that the 1930s and 1940s were a golden age for New York is its legendary mayor, Fiorello H. LaGuardia. Irascible, energetic, funny, polylingual, authoritarian, and deeply humane, he delivered the city government from Tammany Hall, built significant new infrastructure, and gave a voice to ethnic and racial minorities. Here, he assumes his duties for the first of his three terms, getting a good-luck handshake from his predecessor, John P. O'Brien, in the mayor's chambers in City Hall, January 1, 1934.

সিরদি সাইবাবাকে ভক্তের দান ২৮৭ কোটি

বিশেষ প্রতিনিধি : নতুন বছর যাতে ভালভাবে কাটে তার জন্য পয়লা জানুয়ারি সিরদি সাইবাবার আশীর্বাদ নিতে যান এক লক্ষেরও বেশি ভক্ত। ভক্তদের দানে একদিনের দানে অারই সমৃদ্ধ হয়েছে মন্দির কর্তৃপক্ষ। ভক্তেরা নগদ অর্থ ছাড়াও প্রচুর সোনা ও রুপো দিয়েছেন। সিরদি সাই সংস্থা ট্রাস্ট কর্তৃপক্ষ জানিয়েছে বছরের শেষে ১১ দিনে নগদ অর্থ জমা পড়েছে ১৪ কোটি ৫৪ লক্ষ টাকা। তার মধ্যে নগদ ৮ কোটি ৫ লক্ষ টাকা। দানের সোনার ওজন ১ .২৫ কেজি, যার দাম ৪২ লাখ। রুপোর ওজন ১৭ কেজি, দাম ৫ লাখ। ১৪ কোটি ৯৩ লক্ষ টাকা। ২২ ডিসেম্বর থেকে ১ জানুয়ারির মধ্যে এই অর্থ জমা পড়ে দানের বাক্সে। গত এক বছরে মন্দিরে ভক্তদের দানের পরিমাণ ২৮৭ কোটি। ২০১৮ সালে দানের পরিমাণের থেকে ২ কোটি বেশি। ওই বছর দান সংগৃহীত হয় ২৮৫ কোটি টাকা। গতবছর নগদ অর্থে এসেছে ২১৭ কোটি। বাকি ৭০ কোটি জমা পড়ে সোনারুপো, ডিডি, চেক, বিদেশি মুদ্রা প্রভৃতি।
