Did you know that there is a government approved legislation project called SEAL? Also known as the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning, SEAL is “...guidance outlines school’s roles in promoting the progress and achievement of all students. It advocates for teachers to ensure inclusion by using materials that show positive images of race, gender, disability and sexual orientation” (schools-out.org). This goes to show that teachers should know about all past, current and future legislations, this journal gets that point across rather well.

The journal then goes on to explain how would be the best way to address this preparational requirement, by giving examples. Such as, “Provide ample practice opportunities with varying pedagogies. Teach standard algorithms alongside alternative methods...Mastery of different approaches can deepen pre-service educators’ understanding of the mathematical concepts and prepare educators to individualize instruction for students with disabilities” (Powell, 92).

Part 3

The very first preparational requirement the journal speaks of, and debatably the most important, is that special education teachers should be fully aware of legislative requirements and guiding standards. Pre-service educators and newer teachers of special education programs are able to learn about how they are supposed to be teaching in class from getting to know the legislation related to the students. Being familiar with the standards can also give teachers ideas as to what they should be teaching at given points in time or help them determine what they will be teaching in the following year.
