Probably a few years ago at this point, I watched Tamayura. Specifically its OVA, the start of the entire series. I then proceeded to not watch the rest of the series, even though I loved the OVA a lot. My friends and I are now doing monthly anime groupwatches where someone picks a show and the lot of us watch it, and one of said friends picked Tamayura. Ideal chance for me to rewatch the OVA, and then actually watch the rest of the series. Now when I first watched this OVA I gave it a 9 - I imagine I was having a terrible day and it really lifted my spirits or something - on the rewatch it's definitely not quite that good, but I still like it a fair amount, lowered it to a 7 in fact. This series is very very gentle in a way that few series manage to execute with such finesse, like really soothing in the visuals and the music and the characters and the setup and everything. It also gets photography in quite a nice way, the way Potte in particular will rush to get her camera out or crouch down on the ground for interesting angles is straight up relatable. There are some themes alluded to of what Potte will want to do for her future but they take such a comforting approach in telling her that not having a destination in mind is totally fine too, that would've been nice to hear when I was younger. More specific to the timeframe of the OVA is just the idea that photography reminds you of memories which invite new experiences of their own, all nice things. I'm excited to actually sit down and watch the TV anime next and see how it continues any of these themes, and also just ideally will remain cute and relaxing. Dab.
