Okay, but why does Cochepaille have a tattoo with the date of the disembarking at Cannes. You can’t just say that and refuse to elaborate. I want to know his backstory dammit.

Champmathieu gets a chance to tell his story. The story itself is of extreme poverty and difficulty making ends meet. Champmathieu relates his and his daughter’s story in one go, unsure of the words in such a huge court with everyone looking at him, that coupled with his way of telling the story, does not lead to the audience sympathising or caring about it.

The audience’s reaction does not fit the solemn story, it is a grotesque reaction, they treat this as a play/drama/entertainment, I don’t know why but it gives me all the vibes of Quasimodo’s trial, with the people laughing at and joking about him, although here, the author is in favour of Champmathieu.

Champmathieu’s laughter and his responses to Brevet and Chenildieu’s testimonies reminds me of Fantine’s laughter when she was about to be put into prison. It is sinister and desperate, because he is poor and because he is illiterate and perhaps does not fully understand the lawyers with their big words, saying things at him. Once again Hugo does the thing of relating poverty/illiteracy with the physical descriptions. 

He talks further of his story and the bit about him not having a house, and not having a name, really got to me. It’s the reality that we’ve seen with the other characters who are mired in poverty in this book.

It isn’t surprising that Brevet, Cochepaille and Chenildieu’s testmonies are inaccurate, they haven’t seen Valjean for eight years and memory can become mistaken. 

Madeleine gets up from his privileged place behind the judge, there must be something to say in the way he is seated, behind the judge (who is trying to be fair), since he is compared to Jesus frequently, to save the man from the fate, when the judge/law cannot. It is interesting that people instantly recognise him with the name he has been trying so hard to keep but will now have to give up.

Madeleine’s hair turns completely white due to the strain/shock he is under, even his voice seems to be unnatural, only his clothing remains perfect and untarnished in any way - his announcement is compared to a religious terror. They are in the presence of a great deed/great person, Hugo is not subtle about that.

Valjean’s speech about wanting to become honest and return to honest society and how prison changed him is heart breaking, especially delivered in that melancholy voice. Everyone starts by respecting but not believing him, even after he tells specific details about Brevet, Cochepaille and Chenidieu, and then they become dazzled by the bright light (Hugo are you even trying to be subtle?yes, we know Valjean is a saviour/great man/Jesus like figure/becomes like Bishop Myriel).

His smile of triumph and despair is at once sad but also I cannot help but think that it is very Romantic. A mixture of laughter and sadness, grotesqueness and sublime combined. 

His mic drop moment is also pretty great, it is understandable that he wishes none of this had happened, but no one stands in his way, everyone is shocked, they cannot understand that the respectable man before them is a convict, they don’t laugh but stare solemnly as he leaves and Champmathieu is cleared of all charges, even if he might not have understood what was going on, but to be fair, I don’t think a lot of people present at the trial did too.

More on 1.7.11

Thing that has been bothering me for a day or so:

Was Madeleine trying to discredit the prisoner-witnesses in his proofs of knowing them? Except for Brevet, he seems to have zeroed in on things that will bias the court against the witnesses. 

Unless there's some symbolism I'm missing, Brevet's checkered suspender is neutral information... but JVJ does bring up Brevet's history in the galleys as part of his statements. Not that this is new information, but Brevet is the only one of the trio who is not a convict-for-life, and who's good behavior and religious practice have been brought up as relevant, semi-redeeming attributes. JVJ doesn't contradict that, but the galley mention could be read as an undermining reminder of his past. This is certainly the weakest angle.

JVJ's use of Chenildieu's self-made nickname is what really jumped out to me. This is a restoration-era court with a crucifix on the wall--choosing to bring up Chenildieu's atheism ("Remember how you nicknamed yourself 'I deny God'?") is an attack on his already-low respectability with the court. And the other identifier is that Chenildieu tried to burn off his TFP brand [marking him as a life-long prisoner, thanks @aflamethatneverdies]. On one level, this is useful to JVJ because it can be proved: Chenildieu either has the burns or does not. But, it also tells the court and jury that the witness has subjected himself to extreme pain in order to conceal the judgement of the law and possibly to prepare for breaking it again in the future (say, by escaping).

Cochepaille also has a convenient physical trait to reveal: a pro-Napoleon tattoo. A 100-days era pro-Napoleon tattoo. Definitely going to be well-received by a Restoration-era court.  

So, coincidence, or JVJ trolling, or some added insurance to make the convicts' testimony suspect?

Brickclub Les Mis 1.7.11

Blink and you miss it: JVJ's hair has gone from gray to white in the hour since he arrived in Arras.

Anyway, having made up his mind, Madeleine interrupts the court to demand Champmatheiu's release and declare himself to be Jean Valjean. For some reason, no one believes this, and so he offers personal memories of the three witnesses. Everyone's too shocked to do anything, however, so JVJ just... leaves.

But it did work.

I'm assuming Chenildieu's "T.F.P" brand/tattoo thing is marking him as a convict sentenced to hard labor for life. Anyone know more? 

It JVJ uses the plural 'vous' a fair amount. The prosecutor and judge get a formal 'vous' from him, and he starts addressing Brevet with the formal, but after the pause switches to the informal, which he also uses towards Chenildieu and Cochepaille (I assume the prisoners all use ‘tu’ with eachother and this is helping to establish that JVJ knows them).
