BIG BUSINESS BAD

Sarah told me last night that she has a soft spot for 10 Barrel. I tried to tell her that she’s wrong. That 10 Barrel is fine and all, but their owned by InBev now. So what? She replied. And I wasn’t sure why it was bad anymore. It used to make sense. I muttered something about shady business practices, about profits taking priority over people. You know, all that usual stuff. 

But it was clear that the old arguments don’t hold any more. Craft beer is turning into big beer faster than big beer can buy up little breweries. Every big brewery is taking subsidies and tax breaks to open satellite plants in North Carolina. Stone is laying off employees the same year they open a new brewery in Berlin. And the Brewer’s Association and the Beer Institute, which represent brewers, are lobbying congress to lower taxes on beer -- excuse me, their beer.

I threw up my hands. She’s right. 10 Barrel is pretty good. DUB, the appropriately named double IPA, is chock full of flavor. It’s resinous and earthy with an appropriately boozy finish. And in the center is all the sweetness of a can of Dole pineapple. It’s nothing new in the world of IPA, but it’s well made and very satisfying.

10 Barrel Brewing’s Dub (Picked up at Whole Foods in Berkeley). A 3 of 4. Yep, this is a big DIPA - smells of lots of citrus pith and resinous qualities and some faint caramel sweetness. Drinks with much the same profile - there are a lot of tropical notes going on in the body and plenty of firm bitterness balanced by a decent residual malt sweetness. A bit harsh and boozy on the finish, but not bad overall.

10 Barrel Brewery Riding Solo Single Hop IPA: A: sipped it from the bottle so I may never know. S: really fruity and floral like bergamot with a little hop lupulin and a ganja like skunkiness like the fresh hop funk that it contains. T: like straight guava with a little hop bitterness. Malt is sweet and light not roasty. M: fruity sweetness and hop skunky funk lingers on the tongue. O: wow this is a good beer. One of the best I’ve had from 10 Barrel. Wish I knew which hops they made this with. 4.5/10.

Jamaican Me Pumpkin (2014) from 10 Barrel Brewing in Bend, Oregon is a pumpkin pie spiced ale aged in rum barrels - and that's exactly what it tastes like. Flavors of molasses and vanilla mix nicely with the pie spice making this 10.4% beast very easy drinking. If you like rum and pumpkin pie, you'll like this.
