We are open to talks, says Kurup

KUALA LUMPUR
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup has expressed willingness to meet with Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders to discuss the 10-point plan aimed at helping resolve the “Allah” issue.
He said there was willingness to discuss the issue with state leaders.
Kurup added this was his own view and not that of the government.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had said on Friday that the 10-point solution on the “Allah” issue was subject to existing state and federal laws.
He had said the laws on the usage of “Allah” differred from one state to another.
Echoing Najib’s stand, Kurup said the10-point solution was still subject to state law.
Reflecting on what Najib said, Kurup explained that it was the reality of how things were.
“If there are some quarters who are unhappy, we need to discuss and find a solution.
“Enough is enough, the time has come for people to stop harping on issues that can hurt the feelings of others,” he said, adding that people should project goodwill as this would help promote peace and harmony.
The minister said there were a number of irresponsible people who wanted to see trouble in this country.
“We should remind such people that this is not in our culture. We, as Malaysians, can sit down and talk things out.
“This will help us find solutions to problems we are facing. Let’s work together and not condone acts that can bring about disharmony in the country.
“The government can always engage the public to make them understand the issues facing the country. This way, we can help resolve problems before they get out of hand.”
He said this at the soft launch of the World Interfaith Harmony Week at the Federal Territory’s Department of National Unity and Integration. It will be held in Sabah from Feb 1 to 9.
Kurup said the programme would be promoting harmony nationwide, supported by the Education Ministry.
The latter has agreed to work on promoting and talking about harmony during this period, which is similar to the message taught at National Service camps.
