Day 5/100 of #100daysofedgespecies: Hispaniolan Solenodon. The Hispaniolan Solenodon is endemic to the island of Hispaniola. It is pretty unique as it’s one of only a few venomous mammals. It produces venomous saliva that it injects into its prey through specialized grooves in its incisors. It is also one of the last representatives of an ancient lineage of shrew-like mammals that lived with dinosaurs! I’ve always wanted to try #the100dayproject, but I know if I try to do it with felting I won’t be able to keep up. So instead I’m going to try doing #100daysofEDGEspecies drawings. I’m not going to put too much pressure on myself to post every single day, but I will commit to getting to 100! I’m sure I’ll get ideas for new woolies to make along the way as well.🙂 The @zsledgeofexistence programme focuses on highlighting and protecting the world’s most Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species. I’m excited to showcase some of these lesser known and super unique species. 🌱 Day 1/100: Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna. This egg-laying mammal is one of three species of long-beaked echidnas and named in honour of Sir David Attenborough. It lives in the Cyclops Mountains in the Indonesian province of Papua and is considered to be Critically Endangered. The species is known from one specimen collected in 1961. I’m a bit behind on #the100dayproject, but I’m keeping at it at my own pace.🙂 Day 3/100 of #100daysofEDGEspecies: Chinese Giant Salamander. This species is the world’s largest amphibian and can grow up to 1.8 metres long! It is one of only three living species of giant salamander in the Cryptobranchidae family. This family diverged from all other amphibians over 170 million years ago during the Jurassic Period, making it one of the most evolutionary isolated families on the amphibian evolutionary tree.
