I’ve got a novel excerpt in the latest issue of Territory—this is the first bit of the slow-going novel I’ve sent into the world. Plus, I’ve been building all of my #100daysofremixedstories from the text of an earlier draft of this, which makes “Bedtime Stories” not quite the original source, but almost. Territory always does such cool stuff, and now they’ve turned my excerpt into a box of chocolates you can read one piece at a time (it’s even more Whitman’s-y on a desktop). For a hundred days, I’ll be cutting up things I’ve written and using the pieces to make new things. My goal is to not be slow or fussy, as I often am when I write. This is for fun. This is play. This is another version of Lynda Barry’s painting the alphabet. Inspired by artist Hong Hong, I want to ask, What can I make in five minutes? Inspired by artist and writer Georgia Greeley and writer Sejal Shah, I want to see how much lighter the day becomes when it’s centered around experimentation and scissors and tape and a messy table. I wasn’t planning to do the #100dayproject this year, and then suddenly I was. Writers out there, all you artists, maybe you want to join me too?
