Starting from this very Sunday I have decided to make a weekly list (10 fics at the time) of my favourite Merthur fanfictions. My original idea was creating a masterpost (a sort of TOP 100 list) but after browsing through my 3000+ bookmarks -collected since 2008- I've slowly come to realise that I would have definetely forgotten some really good ones and I have no intention of doing that. I'll always be immensely grateful to all the writers of the Merlin/Merthur fandom for creating a safe space for all fans and for sharing with us some of the most memorable stories I've ever read. You've made me dream, you've made me weep and particularly during lockdown you've made me forget all the ugly and kept me sane... so thank you ♥

• WEEK #1

All fanfictions have been chosen in random order from my Diigo account. They vary from modern setting to historical, from canon to reincarnation... but I'd say 80% of them will be set in modern times as it's my favourite era for them. Hope you enjoy this first batch and that YOU may discover some new favourites :3

01. A FORTUNATE FALL by raspberry-pop Summary: Single father Arthur Pendragon, at the end of his rope, finds a miracle in the form of a young cashier boy at the local convenience store. As for Merlin, he's not quite sure about what to make of his new job as an au pair for the wealthiest man in town; but he does know that his employer has more than a few skeletons in his closet.

02. WHAT CHILD IS THIS by lamardeuse Summary: A modern AU with Merlin, Arthur, mayhem, a baby and a jingly elf hat.

03. TO THE SYNTAX OF THINGS by suntipped Summary: He can’t mean what Merlin thinks he means—right? It’s just Merlin’s imagination running away with him, too many nerves this morning, a lack of sleep, the disorientation of being in such an unfamiliar place, or something, that’s it. Merlin edges slightly, subtly back toward the door, but the boy sees his movement and grins even wider like it’s some secret joke, laughs, “Oh, relax,” and strolls forward to easily follow his steps, lingering even closer than before. “I’m not some deranged lunatic,” the boy says, but the very lascivious gleam in his eye ruins it by definitely, definitely claiming otherwise.

04. FAME AND FORTUNE by Bounding-Heart Summary: AU set in Los Angeles, California during the 1990's. Arthur is a movie star. Merlin is a waiter. The word "prat" is used.

05. AN OCEAN OF BLUE by Inane_Rational Summary: His father's empire was falling. There's one last thing he needs to retrieve before leaving the country.

06. CELLMATE by lcacbc Summary: Merlin is dead. No, really. He has just called the most powerful man in prison a prat. A prat he just happens to be cellmates with.

OVERBOARD by Shiny Starlight Summary: When single father Merlin Emerson discovers that the man who denied him thousands of dollars that was his due has gotten amnesia, he seizes his chance for revenge by pretending to be his husband. 09. SEW RIGHT by Candymacaron Summary: Arthur, an all American boy fresh out of the Midwest, is thrust head-first into college life in San Francisco. He'd expected moving in with his girlfriend to be a change, but what Arthur hadn't counted on was the Merlin, the handsome fashion design student he'd be sharing their apartment with (and just how strongly he would feel about him).

10. SMALL WEIRD WORLD by Emjayelle Summary: Merlin is thirteen and in love when he kisses Arthur for the first time. His skin is always too tight, there’s constantly the taste of chlorine in his mouth, and a lot of things—too many things—are left unsaid. It’s very complicated and very confusing, not helped at all by the fact that Arthur doesn't seem to know what he wants either. Early teenage awakenings, unrequited love, pining, coming of age, and feelings. Lots of feelings.

After a while of camping out with various friends, he eventually ends up living with Morgana and her housemates. Featuring pimp!Arthur, stripper!Morgana, addict!Gwen and dealer!Lancelot. How does normal average Merlin even start trying to fit in here?

The Student Prince by FayJay Summary: A Modern day Merlin AU set at the University of St Andrews, featuring teetotal kickboxers, secret wizards, magnificent bodyguards of various genders, irate fairies, imprisoned dragons, crumbling gothic architecture, arrogant princes, adorable engineering students, stolen gold, magical doorways, attempted assassination, drunken students, shaving foam fights, embarrassing mornings after, The Hammer Dance, duty, responsibility, friendship and true love...

Summary: Arthur's secretary is hell bent on getting him a life. He never expected that life to involve her pole dancing friend, Merlin.

I'll Be the World's Worst Possible Date by rotrude Summary: Arthur makes a living as "Mr. Fix It," a man who gets hired by people that have just recently been dumped by their girlfriend/boyfriend. Arthur dates the ex-girlfriend/boyfriend and becomes the worst date possible, sending the girl/boy back into his/her ex-girlfriend/boyfriend arms. But when Arthur gets hired by Lancelot to get Merlin back, Arthur, for the first time, starts falling for one of his marks.

75. The Future Soon by lady_ragnell Summary: Arthur sees a vision of himself and Merlin married and happy, but they can barely stand each other. They both start doing everything they can to avoid it happening.

76. Dead of Knight by jsea Summary: Merlin Emrys, supernatural expert and consultant for the local police, knows that going to the opening night of a vampire bar isn't a good idea, not with anti-vampire sentiments running rampant. So when he draws the eye of the bar's charismatic owner, and the new Master of the City, Arthur Pendragon, he's not exactly pleased. When a series of murders, seemingly the work of vampires, forces them to work together anyway, Merlin unwittingly finds himself falling in love. Suddenly, the lines between work and love are not as cut and dry as they seem.

Better to Have Loved and Lost by Anon Summary: And exactly three months, two weeks and five days from that moment, just when he had thought that he was finally ready to move on with his love life, Merlin had received a text message from Gwen telling him that Arthur had started dating someone...

62. Count Dracula by SPowell Summary: The evil Count Dracula (Merlin) takes advantage of Arthur Pendragon when Arthur comes to Dracula's castle to help him with the recent purchase of properties in London.

The Seven Seas by ZairaA Summary: When pirate Captain Arthur Pendragon rescues a young man from the wreckage of a ship he admittedly sunk himself, he doesn't know he's just sealed his fate forever. Merlin is the most obnoxious loudmouth of a ship-boy Arthur has ever met, but he's also strangely intriguing. While the two exchange insults and keep saving each other's lives, they are inevitabley drawn to each other. The only problem: Merlin abhors nothing more than a pirate.

A Marriage of Convenience by weepingelm Summary: Uther had died and his will stipulated that Arthur was to marry within six months and stay married for at least five years or he would lose the company he had helped his father build. As luck would have it gay marriage had been legalised in the months before his father's death. Now all he needed to do was find someone he could bare to live with for five years and the company would be his.

Emergency by samyazaz Summary: The kid's chart says he's seventeen, but the livid black-and-green bruise mottling his eye and the cracked split lip that's left a smear of blood drying across his cheek make him look vulnerable. The way he glares the moment Merlin pulls aside the curtain and steps inside defies him to say a word about it.

Still, Arthur really hadn't expected to get some random dude pregnant at a frat party. 41. We Are All Diamonds by Footloose Summary: As the precocious heir of a diamond magnate and a famous designer, Arthur lived his entire life sheltered, protected, nurtured and spoiled. He always knew that he would have to step out from behind the scenes and into the limelight to run the family business some day, but he never expected that it would happen so soon or that he would encounter resistance from a board of directors who believe that his disability makes him unfit to lead. Merlin has stood on every stage in every city in the world, performing to critical acclaim, but after years of globetrotting, he's well and truly burnt out. He didn't quit -- he ran away from stardom, dropping to obscurity in the blink of an eye, forgotten, just another face in the crowd. He's aimless and without purpose until a friend asks him to fill in on a job. Neither Arthur nor Merlin are looking for salvation. They don't think there's any for them, that things are just too rotten, too far gone. But in the end, Arthur's quiet strength will be a balm to Merlin's broken soul, and it will be in Merlin's steadfast faith that Arthur finds courage.

The meds tell Arthur to take him home, but never to tell him about their relationship (deep sentimental issues might cause him distress). So Arthur hides everything: the pictures, the engagement rings, he moves his bed into another room... so that Merlin thinks they're just roomates. An old Merlin-piner takes advantage of the situation and starts to hang out with him. Arthur is devasted but he knows he has to keep quite for Merlin's sanity. The only confort Arthur has are the videos of their last holiday, where he had proposed to Merlin.One day Arthur falls asleep with his laptop open, and when Merlin enters the room he can see himself, but not quite smiling and kissing the same Arthur who's now sleeping clutching at two shiny rings.

45. Omission by winterstorrm Summary: Arthur is a p0rn star but hasn't told Merlin what he does for a living.

46. Blind Dates by supercalvin Summary: Arthur has noticed that Merlin hasn’t dated in a while and wants to help his best friend by setting him up on blind dates. Meanwhile, Merlin has been avoiding dating because he doesn’t see himself loving anyone the way he loves his best friend. Reluctant to argue with a stubborn man like Arthur, Merlin goes on these blind dates, but ultimately it’s Arthur who is blind to why Merlin is still single after all these dates.

47. It Takes Two by chicaintcheap Summary: All Arthur wanted was a quick and easy dance class to prepare him for his best friend’s upcoming wedding; he gets much more than he bargained for when he discovers that Merlin, his ex-fiancé, is his dance instructor.

48. In a world called catastrophe by Summary: While on duty in Afghanistan with the Royal Irish Regiment, Merlin is injured by a chlorine gas bomb. He returns home blind in his left eye and suffering from asthma attacks and neither he nor his boyfriend Arthur really know how to cope with this severe change in their relationship.

49. Doppelganger by lunadeath02 Summary: Merlin meets his doppelganger, but does it really mean his own death?

50. Best You Ever Had by Anon Summary: Arthur has been with just about every girl in the sixth form. Merlin pines from afar, knowing he doesn't have a chance. Then Merlin gets an invitation, and realises he has a chance after all. Apparently Arthur is bored and wants to try something new. Merlin knows it's meaningless sex, but he might just be okay with that. Even if the butterflies in his stomach say otherwise.

The only problem is that while they play lovers on screen, with plenty of steamy scenes serving as proof of their fictional feelings, in reality they dislike each other.

Hook, Line and Sinker by methurpleasee Summary: When Merlin's mum convinces him to move to London, to finish his last year of university, and get the fresh start they both desperately need, he expects: new better friends, amazing end exam results and eventually a BAFTA for 'best new director', with his name on it.
