This day in TMHFN history: 11-12 Oct 2014 - 150 Rainbow Directioners Come Out to the Cinema

When it was announced that One Direction’s Where We Are Tour Concert Movie would be screened in cinema’s across the world the weekend of Coming Out Day 11th and 12th October, the event became an ideal opportunity for Rainbow Direction to “come out” in full glory.

Launched only months earlier, in March 2014, rainbow representatives went to 65 out of 69 shows during the WWA tour, starting with very small numbers at each show, but gradually increasing towards a total of 350 participants across the tour.

However, despite this modest success, many people who wanted to participate had not yet had the chance. Many had not been able to go to any show. Some who went to the earlier shows had not yet heard of Rainbow Direction at the time and wanted to catch up. And of course, many of those who had already participated, were very keen to repeat the great experience they’d had wearing rainbows to their show (x, x).

More than 140 people signed up to bring rainbows to the cinema, and as the pictures of their rainbow hats, signs, shirts, scarves and ponchos started popping up on social media on October 11th, Coming Out Day, and the day after, it suddenly became a joyous moment for Rainbow Directioners across the world to celebrate together. Either you were going to the cinema in your colourful outfit, empowered by the knowledge that others across the globe were doing the same at that same moment, or you were online gushing with your friends over all those beautiful proud people.
