Today, Romano got to sit in a bean bag pillow all day. That was all very nice, until he fell asleep and woke up with a hurt back.

We’re not going to forget, but we’re not going to call either. It’s up there “12:30 6 month follow up”. But he won’t be there.
See, the thing is, it all just happened so fast. He wasn’t hit by a car or shot in the gut, but he was gone before I could thank him. You didn’t really know at first, no one did. It’s not the kind of disease that’s easily diagnosed. But everyone knew, just by the way his arm looked like every fiber of muscle had a mind of its own.
What you have to understand is, we aren’t those kind of people. We’re not self starters, we’re not proactive. And if I were being honest -and it’s easier to be, now that he’s gone- we didn’t love him like we should have. No one is to blame, it’s just the way things were. It was difficult to just care, when we had a lifetime of reason not to.
When the last of the people who weren’t us left, we had to come to terms with the fact that he was just not here anymore. It took twenty years, but I missed him. We weren’t used to just loving him. We’re trying. Mostly, we’re okay. But no one can seem to cross out the reminder. No one wants to be reminded that six months ago he was suppose to be alive today.
Listen, no one here was raised in a barn, but we can’t bring ourselves to make another phone call. No one wants to have to say he’s gone more than we have to. He’s not going to show up, it’s no one’s fault. We’re sorry, we don’t mean to be rude. It’s just we’re still kind of grieving.
