Summary: Dean is the infamous leader of a band of outlaws and Castiel is the prince of the Realm who wants to join.
Or, in which Dean Winchester is Robin Hood and Castiel is Maid Marian.
I found this story when I was browsing for Robin Hood-inspired fics, thinking about writing my own. Then I read this and realized there was no point because this is perfect and everything I wanted anyway. It’s short, I know (there is a sequel, but it is also technically an unfinished series) but it somehow perfectly captures the setting and characterization necessary for this legend. The most remarkable thing about it, though, is the dynamic between Dean and Cas. It’s a sharp, barbed, push-and-pull of banter and retorts and judgment that becomes grudging respect, and they both give as good as they get. The tension between them is so thick it practically drips off the page (and it does get-- well, not entirely resolved, but addressed-- in the sequel). Take a few minutes to read this one today, and you’ll be thinking about it for a long time afterwards.
