12 Stories (Interlude 4)
Queer Story
“Queer story, wasn’t it? Not that we aren’t used to it, for a lot of unusual stories come in over the wire.”
The Prince had a terrible memory, so his Father was always getting mad at him for forgetting important things. Like when to look people in the eye, or attending important meetings. So he was issued a decree: get his act together and start remembering. What the King did not count on, however, was that important things vary between people. For the Prince, these were as follows:
1.) Looking under the door at the neighbor’s feet in a hotel room.
2.) A pair of schoolchildren poking a dead jellyfish at a beach.
3.) A massive tempest outside a tailor’s shoppe, the clouds a pair of great demons spitting lightning at each other.
4.) Sitting in a concert hall for a long time (but not the music).
5.) An unusual heating unit in a hotel room.
6.) Playing a game of billiards and pretending he was a cowboy and the balls were cattle.
7.) Going to sleep with the window open, and waking to find his pillow damp with rain.
8.) Staring at pill bugs as they scurried into and out of the cracks in a sidewalk.
9.) Orange light cascading over him in intervals as he travelled through a long, dark tunnel.
10.) Listening to a sad song on a rainy day, huddled under a blanket with a good book.
The moments replayed themselves over and over again in his mind, so vivid the Prince was almost certain he had never truly left them, and the life he currently held was the true fantasy. Sometimes he questioned the rationale by which certain memories were favored. Between a great war or a good cup of tea, he would rather remember the good cup of tea.
But no matter where he transported himself, he would open his eyes and find himself back in his tower, the reedstiltsat his back. With time he found his apprehension replaced with indifference, then affection.
