The Ache that Comes When No One Sees

There is an ache that comes when no one sees, the loneliness that waits until nightfall to creep into my bones like a ghost, silently filling me up until I don’t know who I am anymore.

I let you tell me lies about who I am & who I shouldn’t be. I let myself believe the blame that was  placed on me & I tried to be less demanding, less inconveniencing, less, less, less, until the pieces of me that weren’t desirable were muted & hidden in the back of some closet with my skeletons & my secrets.

I am not a graveyard where you can bury your secrets & never return. I am not a haunted house & I will not let you scare me anymore. I will not let you hurt me.

I am a garden & I am planting patience & bravery to exist in the dark & I am planting love,

but not for you.

You will not walk through me ever again.
