Is familiarity the enemy of fun?
Less Silly
Why do we feel good when we see that someone has experienced the same thing as us?
I think we get that joy because it validates our own experience. “Hey, they also felt that way when they saw the movie. I must have had a correct/acceptable reaction.”
In a messy way, I think it helps humanity define what experiences are valuable. That feeling shapes us individually and as a whole in a powerful and subtle way. Maybe it’s, like, the weak nuclear force of humanity’s development.
It helps us face death. We know we will die alone, but it’s comforting to know that others also face the death of loved ones and will die themselves one day.
I guess another way of putting it is something like: Life is silly. When we see someone experiencing the same thing as us, it feels less silly. Less ungrounded.
