120 Characters
People will only have the mental capacity to communicate with 120 characters at a time. *cough* twitter
People tend to say things like "Art is dead". I will not contest that notion, but would further like to point out that I believe it is actually EMOTION is dead. We are so afraid to say what we really feel. We work jobs that we hate, to pay for rent in a place we do little but sleep in. And then We watch our mouths, our photos, and our internet attitudes just to keep these so-called jobs that we hate in the first place. We clutch to a handheld device, hoping for it to buzz and ignite us with the pleasure of knowing someone out there is actually thinking of you. We are so selfish, yet praise ourselves for being charitable every time we repost a status fighting child endangerment, or donate one single dollar to one homeless man. We date people who we share the bare minimum list of commonalities with just to not feel aloneA picture is only beautiful if it's coated in an "earlybird" sepia tint or if it references a Great Gatsby quote below it. We mask our feelings of regret with the latest catch phrase; even if its merely an abbreviation. We attempt to arbitrarily categorize and relate every interaction in our lives to the lyrics of every song. We keep ourselves composed and pretend to be deaf with our headphones locked in our ears so we don't have to talk to the person on the bus next to us. We are so afraid to be social that we sneak out of the back door, leaving sunglasses and removing our phone numbers from their phone, hoping it can all be forgotten. We say we just want to be friends and that it means nothing so we can seem contemporary, cool, and detached. We made "not caring" trendy so that when you casually let the lie "I'm over it!" fall off your tongue enough times, even YOU start to believe it. But then again, what do you expect, when We've reduced everything we really feel to nothing but memes and 120 characters?
Tweet Tip #1
Now that I've covered some of the key social networks I thought it was time to really dive into some of the specifics of some of the platforms we've already discussed. Since Twitter seems to be the most confounding to people I thought I would start with a tip for your tweets. As this is the first tip I'll give you two for the price of one.
If you're still not sure about the whole twitter thing get a hold of a copy of The Tweetstock Guide to Twitter written by one of my favourite people Kevin Magee. This will give you a simple step-by-step guide on how to set up your account and how to get the most out of Twitter. This is a short book but will give you all you need to know for getting started on Twitter and much more. To see the master in action follow @kevinamagee on Twitter.
The one tip that I have learned on Twitter that has been the most helpful was to keep your tweet to 120 characters. Don't use up all your characters because it forces others to alter your tweet if they choose to retweet it. People will retweet a tweet they really like and think their followers will find useful or humorous but they may reconsider if they have to alter the original tweet. So, keep your tweet short sweet and to the point and if it's fantastic content you'll become a Twitter superstar.
When keeping your tweets to 120 characters please don't use a link that will bring them to a longer version of your tweet. This is something that you can do with some social media dashboards (such as TweetDeck - I'll talk more about this in another post). When I see a link I assume you're going to send me to some interesting content not a longer tweet, a longer tweet defeats the purpose of Twitter. So, please don't do this. Keep your tweet to 120 characters preferable but definitely no longer than 140 characters.
