“Since both justice and charity entail the willing of a good to another, though they differ in object, motive and obligation, the one presupposes the other. Justice involves strict equality; charity goes beyond strict equality and gives freely as a kind of superabundance. Justice is based on right; charity on love. Justice obliges because of this strict equality; charity obliges because of a common appreciation that all are human beings for whom Christ died and is based on supernatural love. Justice therefore has an objective mean; there is no mean in charity.”
