Twelve Days of Twelve Day 8: Character Development.
This has been my absolute favourite thing about Twelve. To me he is the most complex character of the Doctors and watching him deal with his emotionas has been so damn fantastic! I’m going to try to do my best to only cover the main moments but there are sooooooooo many scenes that come to mind.
So. Deep Breath. We start with the abrasive, dark, grumpy Scotsman who doesn’t seem to have anything in common with the Doctor. Hell, he doesn’t even like hugs.
Buuuuuuut... then he honestly started to care about Clara. I’m not a Whouffaldi shipper but I really liked the deep devotion these two had to one another.
He cares so much about her and we all know how that ended...
His crusade for Clara was amazing! Heaven Sent and Hell Bent are absolutely perfect episodes because they show that he is still just as determined as he has always been and not at all afraid to fight his way through any obstacles.
Twelve on Gallifrey was so incredibly intese and and heartbreakig all at once!
Having him an Clara realize that they are just not healthy for each other was so painful and sad, but I’ll also go with Ashildr and say that was indeed beautiful. It did lead to the gorgeous scene in the diner after all.
God, that was sad. But, again, also very beautiful.
So. Now my favourite bit: His interaction with River.
He is so happy to see her!! I could make 200 posts about this episode because I love it so damn much but I’ll try to contain myself.
Having him hear what River thinks about their relationship was so sad and I think his love really shows in this moment hen he reveals his identity. It’s so sweet and tender.
Then of course the fact that he flat out tells her what she means to him and then spends 24 years with her... That tells you a lot about his devotion to her. I personally feel like this is what had a huge impact on him being more settled leading up to season 10.
Then of course his lovely relationship with Bill. He is so very kind to her and incredibly thoughtful in making sure she finally has pictures of her mother. I love everything about them together.
And then finally we get to him and Missy.
He has come so far from being this superficially uncaring person that he tries his hardest to convince her to be good. The fact that he tries so hard, that he wants to believe in the possibility but he is also openly hesitant shows so much complexity.
And there we have it. Twelve towards the end of his run. Realizing what his driving force is.
Ugh! This turned out waaaaayyyyyy longer than planned and I still feel like I am missing soooooooo many wonderful scenes. The writing and acting have been absolutely stellar and I will rewatch all of these episodes for ever and ever.
