Growing up on Archie Sonic made transitioning to the games a weird experience. Like it took so long for me to stop associating the word “Chaotix” with my favorite gang of freedom fighters, consisting of Knuckles + Julie-Su + Espio + Mighty + Charmy + Vector + Saffron. What do you mean theyre a detective agency with three employees. What do you mean Charmy is a little kid and not the prince of the bees
the reason charmy wears a helmet is because he compulsively challenges every goat he encounters and vector and espio were concerned about his repeated concussions
Archie probably had the best way to utilize Knuckles.
The problem with Knuckles is that he's tied to protecting the Master Emerald. So either he only appears in events where not protecting it is justified because of how bad things are or his main duty is ignored outright.
So he's basically stuck on Angel Island.
But in Archie he was allowed to leave more often and have his own adventures because he could rely on the Chaotix to look after the Emerald.
What's great is that it didn't trap the Chaotix either. You need Chaotix to have a story? Just bring Knuckles back for a bit.
Honestly a way to fix Knuckles lack of story significance in IDW is to allow him to trust other characters to protect the Master Emerald so he can do other things.
Cause it kinda sucks that the only way he's involved is if a story ends up on Angel Island.
