NC SPORTS WEEKLY NEWS - Nautical Channel TV FRONTPAGE - July 24th, 2014
NC Sports News Desk Again a number of sensational stories reached the newsroom over the past week, and each worthy of a frontpage spot. We chose Mick Fanning's recent victory at the J-Bay Pro in a super World Champions final against best-mate Joel Parkinson. The Aussies dominated pushing back the Brazilians and packing a poker of athletes in the semi. Now half-way through the ASP-WCT season things are truly heating up. It's a very tight 2014 championship with top-ranked Medina, Parko, Fanning, Burrow, Bourez, Slater, De Souza all within range.
Also in the program: Surfing success will have perhaps to compensate for the recent defection of Team Australia from America's Cup 35. Guess what... there's conflict and controversy on the rules following the recent protocol release, no surprise there. Now the Aussies are no longer the Challenger of Record, the representative of all other competitors vis-à-vis the Defender Oracle Racing. Some say it's disaster, others say no biggie...they'll be replaced. You be the judge. Looks like at least four teams will be racing: Luna Rossa, Artemis Racing, ETNZ, and Ben Ainslie's B.A.R. team as the new British Challenge.
Lucia Metzbauer and the Nautical Channel Team just got back from Pozo, Gran Canaria, where she got to hang out with all the good friends of the PWA. Thanks Richard Page! Capturing the amazing action on the break and the emotions backstage of the Wind & Wave Festival check out Lucia's post-win interviews with Victor Fernandez and Daida Moreno. Plus she's working on an awesome half-hour special coming up on Nautical Channel this September.
Plus this week: Luna Rossa's Francesco Bruni and Senior Correspondent Sebastien Destremau meet up in Barcelona for the 12 meter World Championship, and for a leap back in time. Both were tacticians respectively on Najad and Ikra, and sat down between regattas for an exclusive and unique on-deck chat.
It ain't over. For some high-octane speed sailing check out the recent European Championship in Helsinki for the 49er and 49er FX Olympic classes. Kiwis Burling & Tuke were unrivaled in the men's fleet, while DEnmark's Nielsen & Olsen fought their way to very the top in the ladies FX
