Today, my friend Tony would have been 31 years old. By now he would have been married and likely would be a father. We were robbed of the opportunity to see him as a father on February 19, 2007, when he was shot and killed as he responded to a call for backup on a "routine" traffic stop. It took seven years for his killer to be sentenced for his actions. This marks the first year I am off duty on his birthday since before he was killed. Tony was not the last of my friends on the police force to be killed, but we were close and I miss him as much now as I did when he first died. He was an amazing human being who did his job with compassion and humility. He was known to stop and play basketball and baseball with kids on his beat. Tony is the shining example of what most cops are - and why they don't deserve to be lumped in with the handful of assholes that mar every profession on Earth.
