#14.15 #jack kline #donatello redfield #it's important to me that dean in reference to his own issues with s!sam does Not take jack to sam abt soullessness #there are certain barriers up now that acceptance of the role of 'sammy' has been achieved (as apart from when s!sam directly called out #how dean at the risk of s!sam dying only wanted 'his little brother sammy back') and in order to prevent back tracking there are areas #that go untouched or get redefined (such as the classic mantra for their father 'he did the best he could' which sam adopts)#and despite the neutrality of soullessness as donatello says 'it doesn't make you anything' where the morality is in the action post #losing the soul (as for any being with or without a soul) and where having the soul is merely an aspect of jack just as his grace is a #component of him (as castiel identifies with jack being half angel but that is not the Totality of jacks identity)#but the irony here is that despite dean attempting to avoid evoking s!sam within jacks journey with his own soul it still happens anyway #that in performing for those who are monitoring your behavior you adopt a role and a set of actions as expected which 'what would the #winchesters do?' in this context is fully entrenched in hunterisms (especially as in the previous ep jack identifies himself AS a wincheste #AND as a hunter) thus echoing s!sam Exactly who was performing hunting as Expected #creating the very situation (as when jack chooses to do as 'The Winchesters Would' he takes the Right to kill the snake) that causes #those hierarchically above jack to worry about 'uncharacteristic behavior' (as jack adopts hunterisms in order to make decisions which go #against his assigned role and the perception of assigned innocence JUST like s!sam and 'sammy')#which could have been prevented if sam had been involved as sam has already denied needing jacks 'innocence' back in 13.23 to lucifer #when sam says jack is family no matter what (allowing jack the ability to change grow and be his own person)#And the irony of castiels concern w jacks behavior is that through this divergence from perceived ‘humanity’ it brings him closer to #angelhood that which a trait castiel has relied on to assume his authority over jack (besides his assignment from kelly)

there's something really specific about sam's relative possession and all around autonomy violation in 14.15 peace of mind that i find really horrifying. like sam used to have similar abilities (or abilities that would have panned out to be very similar if he'd explored it further) and those abilities exist through the violation of his autonomy, a kind of violation that he both continues to fight and a kind that he (relatively) gives into more than once to save other lives. it's become the crux of his trauma; if there's one thing that stands out about sam winchester as a character at this point, it's that the idea of any kind or variation of possession (or general violation of bodily autonomy) festers like an an infected wound. but by season fourteen, he's so beat down (for a lack of better phrase), he starts ignoring issues as long as the people around him do and he tramps down his own for the benefit of others; he sways in any direction dean or his general environment does and his agency extends to what will be best for others or dean rather than himself. in 14.15, he literally takes comfort in the control of his mind. he uses it as a crutch for dealing with the loss of his team of hunters. that kind of autonomy violation used to be something he was immune to, something he didn't even have to brush off because of how unaffected he was (2.05, simon said), then it was a means to an end, then it was something that made him angry, and now it's something he finds comfort in. honestly that track of trauma response is very well written, like the idea of your trauma becoming something you find comfort it but. that's also just straight up fucking horrific
