Rocky's Bar and Swayze's Bar
Two sides from the same coin (Nihilism/Last Call)
Visual Narrative Meta. Bi!Dean meta. Destiel meta
15x07 meta. Last Call.
Hello my friends! Here I'm with the third meta! This one is very juicy, because I noticed a huge similitude between Rocky's bar and Swayze's Bar.
Before I continue, please check out my Rocky bar metas from Season 14:
1)What I Can reach (Nihilism)
2) You're always in my mind (Nihilism)
And if you want to check my first two metas from Last Call, here and here you have the links.
Thanks to @agusvedder for her wonderful job doing all the gifs for this meta and taking the pics!!! Love you girl! You're amazing!
Living a dream! The emotional prison again
Having your own bar it was a common dream with Dean and Lee. The difference was, Dean just had it in his head when he was possesed by Michael, and Lee actually was owning one.
Why I say Swayze's and Rocky's bar are parallels and why I think Lee was representing Toxic!Dean here, because he wanted to stay in the bar.
Let's check out some similitudes about the bar and the characters...
First of all, we have the waitress...
Lorna and Pamela were so alike, they were both physically similar and they were flirting a lot.
Pamela with CAS (because she represented Dean's female side) and Lorna with Dean (if we look at it as Lee's female side, because there were so much love in those looks).
So the bar was THE EMOTIONAL PRISON again, for Lee (Toxic!Dean) he was even feeding that monster (fears and toxic masculinity) who was locked, just like Michael was.
And Lee/Toxic!Dean was asking Dean to desist from his hunter journey, stay in this lie that was the bar, keeping your fears and toxic masculinity locked, living a dream living a lie.
You have to fight!
So symbolically, Dean was bleeding, slowly dying, to feed that monster, so he was dying little by little because he feeds his fears and toxic masculinity.
The monster/Michael mirror were hitting the door to come out. Michael did it, but Jack killed him... But the thing wasn't solved because it had to be Dean who kill his own fears and toxicity... "The old boy", as the song was playing and they were singing. So this is it, this was the last call from the bartender in this emotional prions that was his bar.
Here... As I said, Michael represented Dean's fears and toxic masculinity, watch now how Lee and Michael said I'M YOU to Dean, they both are that toxic behavior that must be erased.
So, Dean kills that monster, just like Castiel killed that version of him in the AU, his old Castiel, the soldier that obeyed, Dean killed his toxicity by killing not just the monster, but his friend Lee too, he symbolically killed Toxic Dean. He even yelled YOU HAVE TO FIGHT! To Lee, and it was like if he was saying this to himself.
Just like when he recovered his senses in Rocky's bar, helped by Castiel and Sam. You have to fight!
And that's why my friends, when he came back from that hunt, after CLEARING HIS HEAD, he realizes he wants Castiel. So he isn't mad at him anymore, he acts like if nothing had happened. Because CAS called him, and he was in the bunker now. But things are not that easy. Cas is very very hurted and mad. He will have to fight for his love and forgiveness...
Visual Narrative
There was a lot of symbolism in the visual Narrative, we had this pic from B's bar, and a lot of second meanings in Dean, Lorna and Lee's chat. Like why on Earth Dean would name facts as A and B, and not like first and second, like usually people does.
Then, was a beer name that caught my attention...
The Bruiser beer.
Remember that hand foreshadow in Ouroboros 14x14 when Dean touched his forehead in the exact place where he felt Michael knocking? And then the Bisexual Gorgon hit him on that place, leaving a bruise?
Now, Dean had a bruise on the opposite side from his forehead, is the one toxic Dean/Lee had placed on him.
But now Dean is ready to finally get out from that bar and fight against Chuck and fight for get back the love of his life, Castiel.
And the bar closing, with green and blue colors on it's wall, was the proof of it.
Another proof (and thanks to @bre95611 for this one) was Sam dressed in blue (Cas mirror) and Eileen dressed with the same shirt color (red) Dean was wearing. Remember when I said in my previous meta Samleen are the guide for Destiel canon? Well... More convinced about that right now.
Just a little thing about vomit... Ewww, I know, but we had the blond girl vomiting, and she was the fish, I mean, she was Dean mirror. Vomits again, he was spitting out spiced snacks and old cereal, and now... This girl... Finally vomiting (I should bring here again 14x04 when Dean tested how Sam would react to him VOMITING his truths... Like coming out the closet... I love vomit subtext!
To Conclude
Rocky's bar and Swayze's Bar represented both emotional prison, this episode were a recall to Dean's toxic behavior, but this time, he was able to kill the monster inside his head and the toxic MASCULINITY inside his head too.. he CLEARED HIS HEAD OF ALL OF THAT, so now he's free to love Cas and talk with him and to fight against the big monster, Chuck.
The visual narrative was focused on Dean's bisexuality, and in his inner fight to be free, like a fish. No more beers! And no more girls!
I hope you like this one! See you soon!
