“So, did you do it?” Dean broke the silence, even though it hadn’t been silent for that long. Sam was still taking in the view but Dean was as ever too impatient.
“Yeah, I did it.” Sam nodded, as they both looked out over the river that seemed to have no end.
“And, you gonna tell me about it?”
“Yeah, I been waitin’ a while, Sammy. Time is different here but I’ve been waitin’ a long time. Some days, it feels like only yesterday. Others, a freakin’ lifetime, man.”
“I did it. I met a girl, we had a kid, I got old and then I died.” Sam said casually, listing off the milestones of his ‘apple-pie life’ as if they were items on a grocery list.
“What did you have?” Dean grinned, turning to look at Sam who looked quite flushed in the cheeks for man who had just died.
“Yeah?” Dean chuckled, slapping his brothers back. “Awesome. Did you name him after me?” He said with no doubt that Sam had.
"Yes,” Sam finally turned to look at his brother. “yeah, I did.”
“Huh,” Dean’s face split in two. “well, how d’you like that? Another Dean Winchester walkin’ the Earth. What was he like?”
“Tall, kind, smart.” Sam nodded.
“Kinda sounds a lot like you, Sammy.” Dean said deeply.
“There’s only room enough on Earth and Heaven for one Dean Winchester,” Sam smirked. “if it makes you feel better, he got your stubbornness.”
“I mean, it don’t but it’ll do,” Dean laughed. “and what about her, your girl. What was she like?” He cocked his head, kind of not wanting to know because things had been weird between them from the moment Mary had died. People said it, all the time in passing. Little observations that neither of them hadn't ever ignored but never fully addressed either.
“Not like you,” Sam turned, casting his eyes back over the endless river. “not you.” He muttered.
“Well, I couldn’t have given you a kid now, could I?”
“De,” Sam shook his head, laughing because no matter where Dean was; Heaven, Hell, Earth or in between, Dean Winchester was always so inherently Dean. “what about you?”
“Yeah, have you seen anyone? Mom, Dad, Cas?”
“Nah, I saw Bobby,” Dean shrugged. “when I first got here,” he nodded. “we had a talk then I just climbed right inside Baby and,” Dean cut into the air with his hand and let it come to rest against Sam’s on the bridge.
“That’s our Heaven, is it? Driving around together.” Sam chuckled, shaking his head.
“That was my Heaven, but now you’re here I guess it’s gonna be somethin’,” Dean blinked as a small cabin he had never seen before suddenly made itself visible on the bank of the river. “somethin’ different.” He grinned, pointing at the cabin.
“Ah, Jack really shook this place up, huh?” Sam laughed.
“Under New Management.” Dean gestured in the air.
“About damn time. Do you want to go see it?” Sam wiggled his fingers under Dean’s hand, having not yet had the nerve to hold it.
“Yeah,” Dean nodded firmly. “I do.”
The cabin was it for them, their place, their Heaven. It wasn’t endless fireworks on July 4th or Thanksgiving with a substitute family. All of that had been orchestrated by the giant puppet master in the sky in an attempt to drive a wedge between the two brothers whom he had played with like marionettes for a lifetime. Sam and Dean Winchester had battled all and sundry villains, seen the strength of angels and felt the wrath of God. Together they had been the most powerful force in the universe, and the Earth and beyond was a poorer place without them but in Heaven, in Heaven the Winchesters were infinity.
