Imagining a special 1970's Manila Police squad with all the officers riding different souped up patrol cars. 😍 Regrann from @motorunionofmanila - Made up fantasies about 70's era Manila cops with souped up patrol cars. This one's based off a 5th gen, 1974 Corona with a 152E to chase down the bad guys. 😍 Shirt? Yes? No? Hmmmm. 🤔 #MotorUnionOfManila #AutomotiveApparel #AutomotiveArt #handdrawn #digitalart #digitalsketch #carart #toyota #corona #18RG #152E #policecar #pursuitspecial - #regrann
these were insane inline 4s 2.0L motors based of the 18R family, which was mainly in saloons and trucks at the time in the 70s to early 80s, but they included in the celica anyway. the block was a toyota design, but the head was yamaha. about this time, toyota was really experimenting. the forerunners for the 18R design also included the inline 6 3M, which powered the 2000GT.
these old motors produced 200hp at around 9000rpm. for some tuners, they increased it to 2.1L, and produced 300hp at 9200rpm. these were incredible numbers in the 70s/80s. later, the most impressive output by Group 5 was 560hp, but they didn't use it because the engine wasn't reliable anymore. most of these 152Es were used by Toyota Team Europe for rallying mainly, and some types of racing. Many of the cars powered by the 152E won FIA world cup championships.
the 152Es were specifically 16 valve, twin cam motors with mikuni carbs and mechanical desno fuel injection, built by TRD, basically they were the ultimate versions of the 18R-G. a lot of the design from the 152E (more specifically the head) were also used in toyota's later motors, such as the 4A, 3S, 7M, and 2J motors.
at the time, any celica with this motor was legendary, as these were able to outrun the Fairlady Zs and Skylines at the time. even more, any levin or trueno powered by a variant of this motor called the 2TG outran any other twin cam motor built by the japanese or europeans (including the famous Escort Cosworth motors). many maufacturers envied this motor. what is interesting enough is that a lot of european tuners built a 152E, but implemented their own valve covers to hide the toyota origin.
