     “I’m not saying that, but it just doesn’t seem very likely that You-Know-Who would’ve chosen to put his soul into something that belonged to an enemy.”

     “They weren’t enemies, though. The house rivalry is a relatively modern thing. Didn’t you all read Hogwarts: A History? The significance to the Dark Lord is Hogwarts itself, not the houses.”

     “Fine. But with the cup gone, that only leaves… the snake, for certain… something from Ravenclaw, maybe, or Gryffindor?”

     “And then the Dark Lord himself, but yes, that’s all that’s left. As far as we know.”

     Ron rubbed a hand across his face. “Great.”

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year

Bold of you to assume I know what I wrote this year.

So I actually tried to go back and reread every chapter of Blinding Light I posted since January and then gave up after 3 minutes. I have so many favourite lines from that story, most of them excessively poetic. But the thing that jumps to mind first is the shower scene in chapter 32. That really had been sitting in my head for years and I was so excited to finally craft it. It also changed the story’s direction, I felt, into something a bit more tender and deep, which has been fun to explore.

Do you guys have a favourite line/scene from something I published this year? I always wonder if the things that resonate with me when I’m writing also hit you, the readers, in the same way. Sometimes you comment on things you love that I completely overlooked and just blow my mind.

11. fandom you enjoyed writing for the most this year

I always enjoy writing for Harry Potter because the fandom is so huge and has developed such an intricate lore. It feels like its own little civilisation sometimes. Longfics are also special experiences, and I live for the comments from regular readers and new people who tell me they stayed up all night and consumed over 4 years of work in about 6 hours. (I salute you.)

The Star Trek: DS9 oneshot I published in January felt meaningful, too, since it was femslash and the reviews I get for f/f stories always come from a sweet place.

That being said, Impetus took me by surprise because I somehow managed to do something no-one has done before (it’s still the only tagged fic for that pairing on Ao3) and it was so exciting to see people passing it around with exclamation points.

13. favorite writing song/artist/album of this year

oooh, interesting. Honestly, I’m not one for writing with music; I get distracted too easily. But without a doubt my album of the year is the soundtrack to Elisabeth das Musical. Ugh, what a show. Only discovered it in late July but somehow managed to be my most-listened to album for the whole year.

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write

I mean I don’t think I ever expect to write anything, especially one-shots, until suddenly inspiration strikes and I can’t just leave it in my brain. But I suppose Impetus is probably the one that took me most by surprise. I had only been in the Elisabeth fandom for a few weeks, I don’t really go for crossovers, and it came out way sexier than I first thought. But it was one of those perfect storms where the story just materialised in my head one day, perfectly whole, and all I had to do was give it room on paper.

25. a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read

oh god. I am the absolute worst at keeping track of things I read. Not to mention 2019 was a bit of a rollercoaster (read: disaster) so I didn’t read as much as I would like. Going through my FFnet and Ao3 history… the one that stuck most is probably Swung by Seraphim by flamethrower. @wooden-turtle suggested it when I asked for recs awhile back, and it was exactly what I needed. Long, complex, with witty characterisations and surprisingly not ship-centric at all (which is unusual for me) but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

If y'all have any more gems hiding up your sleeves or in your bookmarks, please send them my way. I am starving for some escapism. (Except maybe not until Blinding Light is finished. Tempt me at your own risk.)

There are, after all, so many of them, and their populations continue to expand much more quickly than magical society.” Narcissa took a moment to adjust the bag slung over her shoulder. “It would be incredibly difficult to find a truly isolated location. I imagine that, one day, measures will have to be taken to protect Hogwarts’ grounds when the current wards will no longer be enough to deter persistent Muggles.”
