This morning we admitted a long-eared owl.  Other than permanent residents, this is only the second to ever come through our rehab facility. This specific bird, patient.  It has been diagnosed with ocular damage.   Long-eared owls winter in our area but are not commonly seen.  They are a “species of concern” in some parts of the US where their preferred habitat is becoming scarce.   Cool Facts about this species: - Long-eared owls do not build their own nests.  They will use stick nests built in trees by other species, such as crows, ravens, and various hawks. Depending on food availability, their clutch size can range from 2-20! - Long-eared owls hunt “on the wing,” flying low over open ground. - Outside of breeding season, they will roost in groups up to 100 individuals!
