Ready To Fire
The long awaited release of the Milwaukee M18 fuel nailers is here! The internal system use by Milwaukee Tool is a ready to fire system with zero ramp up time. Simply place a battery in the tool, turn it on and fire at will, without delay. Keeping with the FUEL designation, not only does this tool have the powerstate brushless motor, Redlithium battery and a redlink intelligence system, it also has a system to protect the tool and the internal components from over heating. This system is more of a timer than a system of heat detection. As you use the tool, it tracks the amount of nails installed over periods of time. This equation keeps the internals from getting warm and damaging them self.

The one question we get on the release of a new tool is if this tool will replace how a simple task was done in the past. In this nailer’s case, will the battery operated unit replace a pneumatic nail gun. Can it replace our hosed counterpart? Yes. But I do not think you will see large construction crews ditching their air compressors yet. The simple fact that remains is that these units are larger and heavier than the smaller brad nailers. The battery operated nailer will be perfect for construction crews finishing a punch list, remodelers and other people who want the simple and easy way to get a job done. So, while the tool can complete the job, people are not going to make the change just yet.
Tool Protection
While testing this tool we did run across the thermal protection built into the tool to protect the bumper inside the tool. This bumper can heat up over repeated fast use, so Milwaukee built in a protection system so that bumper would not deform or cause issues. In normal use, this thermal protection would most likely never be found. In true form, if you hand us a tool and say it will put in 3 nails per second, we will try to substantiate the claim and abuse it a bit more to see how reliable the tool is. That is the only reason we found the thermal protection. So, for you, the buyer, how does this thermal protect come into play on the jobsite. To put it in simple terms, if you blast out 50 nails as fast as you can, you will most likely have the tool shut down. After the shut down, the tool will put in one nail every 8 seconds if you keep trying to nail. Given more time to rest, it will nail more in a row. The more time that goes by, the more nails are allowed to be fired.
I would much rather Milwaukee built in this protection rather than finding out that may nailer is junk after having too much fun firing out 1,200 nailes in a hour. This protection is all to do with the longevity of the tool and Milwaukee’s reputation in the tool world. This is not a restriction or limitation of the tool, unless you have a job that needs you to fire 100 nails back to back without a small rest.
Overall
Overall, this tool is one of the better designed nailers on the market with liitle nuances that remind you of a pneumatic nailer. The trigger pull is light, short and crisp allowing you to know when the nail will fire. That is a lot better than some of the small brad nailers we have used in the past. This is a well balanced tool that my only real complaint is the button to turn on the tool. I am not a fan of rubber buttons on construction tools. If you in the market for on, watch our video to see if it will fit you and go for it if the tool fits.
