Here we are on the outskirts of Autumn, with a 1930s baking book and a bag full of local peaches. Did you know that Clabber Girl Baking Powder is one of the oldest American brands? 🍑 It has been a kitchen staple since 1899. In the early years, C.G. gained momentum by customer reviews, word of mouth recommendations, and by creative advertising like offering homeowners a free can if they’d put a Clabber Girl sign on their fence post. They also gave butchers special branded tape wit their logo on it to secure fresh cut meat packages and offered recipe booklets like this one offered free of charge to any home baker who requested one. 123 years later and Clabber Girl can now be found in over 40 countries around the globe. Containing 72 pages, it is chock-full of fascinating recipes featuring an array of food products native to the Great White North. Beginning with an introduction by the Minister of Trade and Commerce for Canada, the narrative throughout proudly boasts, in words and illustrations, of all the unique food products that are made and grown in the beautiful, bountiful country of Canada and how they are not too be overlooked by the British home cook just because an ocean separates one country from another. Packed full of interesting recipes devoted to Canada’s best (apples, canned fish, maple syrup, etc) around here we love it best for its engaging recipe names...Rainy River Cocktail, Peachland Shortcakes, Yamaska Batter Pudding, Lake Erie Layer Cake, Wetaskiwin Walnut Salad, Canadian Maple Sugar Omelettes, Prince Albert Potato Cakes, Athabaska Cookies, Crimson Canadian Apple Jelly. In 1933, this pretty lady showed you how to make all the Good Things to Eat using Arm & Hammer Baking Soda:) 🧑‍🍳 This mini but very mighty pamphlet of recipes was no hastily put together, fly-by-night cooking guide - it was Arm & Hammer’s 104th (!) edition of recipes. First established in 1846, in the kitchen of two brothers-in-law, Arm & Hammer has been in business for 175 years making them one of the oldest, longest running brands in America today. 🏆 Over the course of the next few months on the blog and in the shop, we’ll be highlighting the power of cooking pamphlets and their effect on the kitchen and culinary landscape throughout the 20th century. In 1933, when the Great Depression was at its lowest point, and 15 million Americans were out of work, and the banks were failing, and there was no end in sight, this is what your favorite cookbook looked like. There must have been something very fundamentally reassuring when Pillsbury published this Balanced Recipes book in 1933. With its tough aluminum covering and organized recipe inserts, it must have felt solid and steady and straightforward. All that kitchen knowledge and reliability tucked inside a strong metal case. The rows after rows of scrutinized and thoroughly tested recipes. Each one meant to deliver optimal nutrition in a time when every ingredient counted and every meal needed to sustain life and spirit. Stylish, without being showy, its streamlined Art Deco design added just enough pizazz while still being conscious that this was not the time for flamboyance. Yes, to home cooks all across 1930s America this recipe book must have seemed pretty infallible. Like a true friend, a true helper, in the kitchen. This one in particular comes with its own array of handwritten and hand typed recipes too. Another intimate nod to the cooks who came before us. Channeling my inner Anne Shirley, I’d like to call this vintage piece of kitchenware The Dish That Baked A Thousand Pies. Considering it dates to the 1930’s, I think it’s pretty accurate. ♥️ Just imagine how many desserts this beauty has seen over the past 90 years. That would be pies galore... Lemon Chiffon, Chocolate Ice Box, Vanilla Silk, Coconut Cream, Strawberry Meringue, Candied Sweet Potato, all the fruits and all the nuts. Not to mention all the holidays and all the celebrations and all the desserty day to days ... oh the baking adventures! She’s also seen every development in the kitchen since refrigerators became household staples. In the oven, out of the oven. In the icebox, out of the fridge. On the counter, in the pie safe. At the the table, on the windowsill. Hand washed, machine washed. Cupboard stored, cabinet displayed. Passed along, tucked away. That’s what 90 years and a love of baking brings.
