Pierre Balmain on Display, The Reluctante Debutante, 1958
This film version of a play by William Douglas-Home, a success in London in 1955, tells the story of a very nice stepmother, played by Kay Kendall, who launches her stepdaughter, Sandra Dee, as a debutante during the London season. It turns into a farce as the supposedly right man for the young woman is really the wrong man, and the wrong man is really the right man. It is witty, and then there are the clothes.
The story plays out against a backdrop of parties which means that Kendall and Angela Lansbury get to wear gorgeous full-length evening gowns. Kendall’s are more dramatic as you can see, and she wears stoles including the matching red one with fur fox trim and the amazingly fluffy one made of feathers in taupe, while Sandra Dee wears pretty dresses done by Helen Rose. Notice how the clothing follows the rules about aging prior to the 1960s: Dee’s gowns are simpler in both color and cut as befit a young woman, while Kendall wears the clothing of an older, more worldly woman, sophisticated and draped styles.
Even the day suit in red shows how off Balmain’s talent. Notice that this is not the merely round jewel neckline of many cardigan-cut jackets. Instead the back of the neckline is curved and the front nearly straight across. I actually watched this twice so that I could catch all the funny parts as Kendall and Rex Harrison are very good as the worried parents and still have enough time to stare at the beautiful clothes.
