My old baby, Gertrude (with my two doggers at the time), at approx 7,600 ft, on a Forest Service Road somewhere high in the mountains of NM. ‘63*, still proudly 6-volt, original 40-horse engine. She took me everywhere I wanted to go, even through ice, snow and up to 10,000ft in the mountains, for seven full years. I rebuilt Gertrude from the ground up, kept her lookin’ like she did on the outside, but inside and engine-wise, she was brand new...down to the wiring harness. Lasted the “Idiot Book”’s prescribed 75,000 miles on my rebuild before Valve #3 would no longer adjust. Parked her and she became Yard Art for about 12 years. Finally sold her, abandoning my “third life” fantasies, for $300. I hope her new owner kept her as original as I tried to.
*To the purists: Yes, she’s a ‘63, even tho’ she had a Wolfsburg crest on the hood...her hood and fenders came from a ‘62! ;-)
