Cleo & Keith Emerson

Cleo and Keith Emerson met on Saturday 10th February 1968 when he played at The Scene, a club where cleo was a regular. She inmediately loved his looks and his stage persona. She was 17 and he was 19. After the show, Cleo went to his hotel room and that's when their romance started...

On 12th February Cleo went to the airport with him as he was flying back to England and they wrote eachother lots of letters.

[Summer 1968: Cleo and Keith in London, she travelled there in July and stayed util the end of August. Picture 3 shows them in his flat and picture four shows them in his kitchen. Cleo painted those flowers in the wall.]

That Summer Cleo went to England to stay with him, she told her mom she was going with some girlfriends, and she stayed at his flat. Some nights they went to Blazes discotheque, to restaurants, the zoo... they also went to a town near Brighton to visit his parents.

At the end of the Summer she went back home. She missed him a lot but she was happy to be at her home as she wasn't used to live at this flat in a building without elevators. She went back to school and they wrote eachother lots of letters and he event sent her flowers.

For Christmas and New Year Cleo went back to London to visit him again. At this time he bought her an engagement ring.

During that time they went to the Speakeasy, to some theatres, they celebrated Christmas with his parents and relatives. they called themselves Prince Keith and Princess Cleo.

After New Year celebrations, Cleo flew back to The States again. In her hometown she went to The Scene again. Time magazine reporters were there and started to take photos of the groupies that were there, and as Cleo saw some cameras, she went to the front and jumped and had her photo taken.

In February 1969 and article about groupies was printed in the magazine and it included a photo of Cleo and there was a groupie called Cleo as well featured in that article, but it was not her!

One day, Keith went to the office and one of his secretaries showed him the article on Time magazine featuring the Groupies, the photo of his girlfriend Cleo and the quote by a Spuer Groupie called Cleo and he was in shock. Keith broke their engagement and that was the end of their relationship althoug Cleo didn't know it at first and when she was nightclubbing, she looked for a phone and called him right to England and he sound different but she kept calling him.

A few mothns later he travelled to New York with his band, met with Cleo at the regular bar they used to attend and that was the moment when he told her their relationship was over and a new woman was in his life.

Cleo was really furious, angry and upset at that time that she threw to some of the band members the welcoming cake she had for Keith.

She was also so sad that she didn't know the engagement was over that she just couldn't explain herself, but she decided to revenge... if she was a groupie, she would be the most famous groupie!!

Cleo on her romance with Keith Emerson and on being a groupie 

And then I fell in love... of course, there's a big love affair. And at that time he was with a group called The Nice… nobody has ever heard of The Nice, and his name was Keith Emerson. And later he became famous from the group Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. But at that time, nobody knew who he was. But I saw him... he played the organ... he was dressed in fringes, he had long hair... he was so talented... I was in love. Oh, was I in love! And at the time I was writing for a village newspaper called The Downtown. I had a column about the new groups coming in. "Pop Sounds By Cleo," it was called. So I had a good excuse to meet the guys. So I saw him, I wanted him, I got him. And we had a relationship, while he was in New York he was with me. And I went to England twice to see him. And then we got engaged. And then all of a sudden this whole scandal about groupies came out, and it was in Time Magazine, and they mentioned my name, they had a picture of me, "Super Groupie Cleo." But they had a quote from another woman who called herself Cleo. I didn't say that, because I never thought I was a groupie. I did not say that quote. But it had my picture. And when I had gone to London before, the secretaries from the office… they knew me and they were jealous, they were catty, because I had the cute guy. So one day they made him sign his check on the Time magazine article that had my picture as "Super-Groupie Cleo." And he got really angry and he broke off the engagement… and I was heartbroken... I was heartbroken. This was the first love of my life, and it just... killed me. So that was the end of my, uh... Well, no, actually it was the beginning of my career as a groupie, because for revenge… I never believed I was a groupie, but for revenge I said, "If he's going to call me a groupie, I'm going to be the most famous groupie." So I made an album called "The Groupies," where we talked about all the different groups,.
