Retro Thursday: 1990s Kitchen
Some of the aspects of the 1980s kitchens stuck around into the 1990s. These included the Euro style cabinets with the white laminate and light brown trim, the vaulted ceilings, the black or white appliances, and the light colored laminate or tile flooring. Other than these few similarities, the nineties were a decade all their own as you will see in the kitchens pictured below.
The kitchen pictured below is from 1991. As you can see, the Euro style kitchen cabinets were still popular in the early nineties. The counters were white Formica. The tile on the floor is a light color while the appliances are black. This kitchen shows a lot of contrasts but is still filled with neutral colors. The most popular oven/ranges in the nineties were flattops.
This kitchen shows the introduction of the kitchen island, which replaced the U-shaped kitchens of the eighties. The counters are still Formica but they are beige. And the cabinets are still a light brown like in the eighties. The laminate on the floor continued to be popular as you can see.
This kitchen shows the pantry closet, which replaced the former pantry cabinets of the eighties.
The kitchen below continues the eighties trend of vaulted ceilings but the lighting looks a little more modern. The countertops, cabinets, and appliances are heading towards the whitewash look, which became more popular in the late nineties, but it isn’t quite as light enough yet.
The kitchen in this picture shows the popular whitewash look of the nineties that the previous kitchen was edging towards. Even the kitchen tile is the same color as everything else. The most popular appliance color in the nineties was white. The plants on top of the cabinets were also popular in the nineties. I guess people thought it added a little bit of color. There is also an island in this picture, which was popular.
