Tuesday 19th September- Oil Paints 2
For these paintings I used oil paints in colours that complemented the grounds I had laid down the day before. I started by stencilling the letters and then working into them.
With the green '2s' I used different shades of green, having them darken more towards the bottom of the piece. I added a little bit of shading and highlighting on all of them but is more noticeable on the lighter green 2s. I then decided to give them more depth by working into the background. I ended up doing more to the background than I intended to and I eventually covered up all the stamped 'Ws' I had done the previous day, which I am disappointed about. I used a sponge to apply and drag the red paint across the paper so that I didn't have such a thick layer. The piece went from being quite bright to very dark and I can't say I like how it looks finished. The only thing I do like about it is that, where the acrylic paint on the ground was thick and layered up, you can see it through the oil paint which give the surface a unique texture.
The blue 'Ps' on the yellow ground was constructed from a mistake. Originally the ground was a royal blue colour and I painted just the outlines of the letter P all across the page at different angles. I then thought it would be a good idea to splatter orange paint on the surface, however the paint was not thin enough to get a good splatter and ended up looking a mess. I used my index finger to smudge the yellow oil painted Ps until they were no longer visible. Because the background colour then changed to yellow, I stencilled two blue Ps to keep with the complementary theme of these pieces and then used a lighter blue to stencil just the outline of the P a couple of centimetres off to the right of the darker blue. I ended up really liking this piece because it doesn't look precious; you can see in the darker Ps that some of the oil paint has been lifted off where something has been resting on top whilst the paint was still dry. If I had been more precious with this oil painting, I would have made sure that A) nothing was rested on top whilst the paint was still drying and B) if it were tampered with, I would have neatened it up. I am learning that I should not always be so controlled with my artwork and that I should experiment with making quicker work.
