My life would literally suck without One Direction
One Direction has taught me a lot about myself since I became fixated with “What Makes You Beautiful” in 2012. I remember sitting at Rita’s Water Ice with my best friend, afraid to tell her of my newfound obsession. All of a sudden she says “So…I’m in love with a boy band…” And we spent the next half hour talking about our budding love. Over the next year (and after they sold out their Take Me Home Tour a year before it started), we insisted it was just a phase. Well, it’s been 4 years and I’m still in love with these goobers as much, if not more, than I was back then.
One Direction has steadily given me an escape from reality. After my dad died in June 2013, seeing them gave me something to look forward to. (I saw them in concert 3 weeks after his passing). I’ve gone through the hardest break-up of my entire life and songs like “Fool’s Gold,” “Happily,” and “Over Again” expressed all of the emotions I was feeling at the time. My go to pick me up song is “Best Song Ever.” The last 4 years of my life has been a roller-coaster ride, and One Direction’s music has been a constant source of happiness when I needed it most. If I wasn’t looking forward to seeing them in concert, I was looking forward to their newest album. Seeing the band go from a bunch of young kids finding their way through the music industry to seasoned musicians has brought me a lot of joy. But it’s honestly more than that. They have inadvertently helped me find myself.
My love for One Direction has made me love and understand myself more. In middle school and high school, I hid (as best as I could) my love for pop music, particularly boy bands. Since, I’ve accepted my music taste unapologetically and learned my likes and dislikes. This has carried over into my personal life. Simply embracing my love for One Direction has helped me be less apologetic to the things I like and don’t like, whether it be entertainment, fashion, or even people. I’ve bonded with friends over our mutual love for One Direction. My younger sister and I have especially become closer for this reason. Finally, I’ve been able to stick up for myself more. As I’m sure most can imagine, I get a lot of heat for loving One Direction. Most people can’t look past the fact that One Direction is a boy band and understand their talent, even after the huge success of songs like “Story of My Life.” I’ve been told that I can’t possibly have good taste in anything because I feel so strongly about One Direction, both jokingly and seriously. Which is fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Sticking up for the talent of One Direction has given me tougher skin.
Despite the fact that One Direction is no longer together, they will forever be a part of my life. Some of my happiest memories can be found in their music. And most importantly, I’m a better person for being a fan. As cheesy as all of this sounds, it’s the absolute truth. My life would suck without One Direction.
when fans watch old videos and have a huge smiles on their faces the whole time and then realize their hearts were beating quickly just proves what an impact 1d had on their fans. i can’t be the only one.
