2D art that walks and talks?
On Saturday, April 5, 2014, my garage turned into an art studio. Amongst the lawn mower, garbage cans and other various stored items, Jess Watson and Ryan James took center stage to create 2D art that walked and talked.
Several weeks ago, I came across a TED talk by Alexa Meade. In the last few months of her college career, Alexa stumbled upon a brilliant style of art that caused her to change her career goals and, ultimately, her life. Alexa took 3D objects (e.g. food, people) and turned them into paintings. She essentially made 3D appear 2D.
I was inspired!
For months, I had wanted to collaborate with artist, Jess Watson. Her take on life and art was something I wanted to be a part of in a creative way. After viewing Alexa’s artwork, I knew this was the type of project that would fit Jess’ style perfectly. I was tickled pink.
During a coffee meeting, we decided to start simple. We left with a date for the project and a goal to find a volunteer. Beyond that, we had no idea where the project was going to take us. We were fortunate to have several interested models that were willing to get paint in their nose and ears. It is one of the many benefits of being surrounded by so many talented people.
Since our goal for the project was so vague, I decided to choose a male model. It had been awhile since I had worked with a male model and even longer since I had worked with Ryan James. Ryan accepted the offer and challenge of being painted with acrylic paints.
The project comes to life.
When the day came, we gathered in my garage, and despite the humidity, the afternoon proved to be perfectly acceptable where the weather was concerned. We were joined by our significant others, which made the project even more enjoyable and it gave us an audience to wow as it took shape.
In a blog about this project, Jess talks about learning from this trial and how she might approach it differently the next time. I also feel the same way about my photography. However, as far as a test run goes, I think we did a FANTASTIC job.
The Images
Please watch the video below and take some time to enjoy a few of the individual images below the video. Thank you and I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as we enjoyed creating them!

Beauty Abounds
Another Lesson
I have had another wonderful experience through yet another workshop with Dave Schlenker of Corgi Photo. This lesson focused on metering a white backdrop and beauty poses. My heart is all a flutter with the results.
I took my sweet time…
