Off to a good start in the year of excellence: New Era Biology Society holds 1st General Assembly in the Centennial Year
Within the year of the INC centennial celebration, the current administration of the New Era Biology Society (NErBS) successfully held its 1st bi-annual general assembly at the NDEP center, August 13.
Jewel Anne Salvador and Chelzza Marie del Rosario have done their stints as emcees of the prestigious event. They bestowed their warmest greetings to all of the attendees of the program, especially, the Biology freshmen who outnumbered the attendees from the higher year levels.
Professor Maribel Beltran Cruz acknowledged the presence of the students and also the members of the College of Arts and Sciences Department: Professor Mylene Andaya; Professor Aileen Berroya; Bro. Ferdinand Monterde, College Secretary; Bro. Orlando Cabigting, College Dean; and Professor Michael Flores, Biology Adviser.
“Thank you for joining us and this is the time that we bond to each other yearly, either kung ano man ito—molecular bond, metallic bond—the intermolecular forces that we have… Pwede ring metallic, ionic, covalent bond…” a cracking joke by Professor Cruz in her welcoming remarks.
“Ang alam ko ay you are in the right track of choosing Biology [program]. And I know magiging successful kayo in your career,” Professor Cruz added.
Audio-visual presentations were given a highlight, conveying throwbacks of all the activities of the curriculum, recollecting the organizations’ unity throughout the years, reminiscing of how everyone took their heroic stand for the organization, and the gist of what challenges might encounter by the students in the world of Biology.
After one of the audio-visual presentations was presented, Dr. Orlando Cabigting Jr. delivered his remarks. “As you all know, we have just started the centennial celebration of the church, and New Era [University] is part of the parade of victories… Sabi nga ng nasa Board of Trustees, having the Philippine Arena named after New Era University as the owner, implies that NEU as the biggest auditorium in the world. We will have Bocaue campus in the near future.”
He also mentioned the impending ASEAN Integration 2015—the decision to create the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to deepen and broaden economic integration which requires liberalization and cooperation among the ten member-states.
“ASEAN Integration will commence next year, 2015… [In ASEAN integration] there would be a free flow of goods and services, even in education… In short the name of the game is indeed globalization,” he mentioned.
“One of the goals and objectives of our alma mater is to produce globally competitive graduates, so how can we realize that? Paano mangyayari ‘yon, kung ‘yung mga estudyante ay hindi naman pala-aral? Just a piece of advice—just focus yourselves on your studies… Kapag may disiplina ka, madali kang makakatapos… Someone who is discipline is determined that the right time will come [that] he will finish his course and he will be successful,” he added.
Before the officers of the New Era Biology Society (NErBS) were introduced by the NErBS President Christian Jio Otrera, Professor Michael Flores had announced the sequence of the various events or programs that will be conducted by the organization such as fund-raising activities, outreach programs and educational tour.
In search for Mr. and Ms. Bio and Talentadong Bio were considered a joyous landmark of the event as the participants plunged into the climactic showdown of wit, talent and unity.
Joaquin Bendal (from 2nd year-2A) and Lorraine Sta. Cruz (from 3rd year-3A) were crowned as Mr. and Ms. Bio, and the 2nd year-2B bagged the gold trophy in Talentadong Bio.
