Pachinko Ep5 uses a wide variety of techniques for 2-shots in scenes which 'just' involve two characters talking. Three in particular occur right in a row; the techniques used aren't merely to look good or different, but underline what the characters are doing / feeling.
Yoseb and Kyunghee disagree, and the framing makes their separation clear. When they're in the same frame, they're making (or avoiding) eye contact via mirror. They're lit in distinctly different colours. Their single shots are 'clean,' w/o the other character in frame.
Sunja and Isak share words which bring them closer together. They are only shot in close-close-ups; intimate. Sunja turns more and more towards Isak as the scene goes, until they squarely face each other. Shots focusing on one character always have the other in frame.
Naomi and Solomon have their first 'real' discussion, but both are still guarded. It is shot entirely from behind / over each others' shoulders. Some wides and mediums are used. Sometimes they are in the corners of each others's shots, but drift in and out.
#Pachinko's Ep 5 shot choices all serve to underline the relationships within scenes: how close characters are, what they're feeling:
1 = temporary disconnect 2 = growing connection 3 = fluctuating trust
How the lens views them shapes how we see them seeing each other.
