I don’t have much to say about this one. It’s a long description of Napoleon that probably lands a lot better for someone who actually has prior knowledge and opinions about Napoleon. Clearly Hugo has opinions about Napoleon, and he almost seems to be trying to paint Napoleon as the hero of a classical tragedy. He is cheerful in the face of both mortal and Divine roadblocks, smiles in the face of Wellington’s superior forces and ignores the rumbling of thunder in his wake.

Once again, there’s a very insistent description of the particulars of the geography of the plateau. This battle could only happen as it did in this place, and he is lovingly, meticulously cataloging all the nuances of the place so that we understand why it all played out the way it did. And some of that involves comparing the way the place is now to the way the place was then. This battle literally reshaped the landscape.

There’s something... poetic, maybe, about the way Hugo is setting this up. Waterloo is only understandable if you understand the landscape on which it was fought, but the battle itself altered that landscape so drastically that it is impossible to see it as it was. Waterloo rendered itself incomprehensible to anyone who wasn’t there.

And there’s clearly Something to that, but I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. I’m going to have to keep it in the back of my mind as we go through the rest of this section.

2.1.7

Napoleon is in good humour- very good humour, to the point of being too sure of himself, because he thinks that everything is working out to his plan. I find it interesting that Napoleon seems to be convinced that it is his destiny to win this battle because he is a Great Man.

The lightning in the sky (and thunder later on) is something he sees as a sign from God, who he feels is supporting him in trying to fulfill his destiny. Even the way he talks is expansively, as Hugo tells us and is convinced of the battle being in his favour. His preoccupations seem to be about his destiny and himself, during the first half of the chapter.

As readers, Hugo has already told us about the chaos theory of battle making it hard to predict the outcome and here he also talks of God’s smile being Supreme. God/Providence is the final decision on whether the battle will be successful, even though Napoleon thinks the battle already is his. Napoleon should know not to be so sure of himself and to rely only on himself, because pride cometh before a fall, etc. etc. in religious texts. 

It’s also interesting that throughout this battle Napoleon is engaging in banter with his officers (Hugo probably wants to show him in a good light, much like his feelings for Louis Phillippe, he still likes Napoleon). And Napoleon is brave, because he does not flinch or step back from the cannon balls and the bullets that are raining around him. Both Wellington and Napoleon have been shown to be brave in the battle.

Hugo also says something about the battlefield being disfigured to depict it as a monument to glory. Things have shifted so much from the past that they are no longer recognisable. Hugo writing all the particulars of Waterloo much later on, must be feeling that fact deeply, especially during his exile he would want to preserve the memory of the place as it was, just as he does it with Paris during other chapters. 

It’s still a little bit heartbreaking that a great trench due to rain, seems to swallow up an entire contingent of the French army, leaving no traces of their graves. Though I do find Hugo’s insistence that, No, Wellington and his army did not defeat Napoleon, a series of unfortunate circumstances and Providence did, kind of amusing at the same time. It’s a good thing that this is not meant to be an accurate version of events.

We are also told of some very minor people who this ditch killed several years before, people who we don’t know about, but Hugo wants us to know about the minor details and the ordinary people killed at every point, this is the reason he is writing this history of Waterloo, otherwise he expects the readers of his time and us, to already know what the historians think of this battle. The ditch which swallowed ordinary people like M. Bernard Debray- a merchant of Brussels and M. Mathieu Nicase a peasant, will also be a problem for a Great Man like Napoleon, but more on that later.

(Sidenote: once again there are so many parallels with the barricades, with our group of revolutionaries also discussing and laughing before the fight, like Napoleon and his generals).
