Opening night at the Tavern on the Green, October 20, 1934. Parks Commissioner Robert Moses and Mayor LaGuardia are among those in front. The building housing the restaurant began in 1870 as a sheepfold for the 700 Southdown sheep that grazed in Central Park's Sheep Meadow. Moses was responsible for turning it into a restaurant, part of his park renovation. He evicted the sheep and sent them to Brooklyn.
