HDD 圧縮は PC の高速化に寄与する？

私はこれまで、HDD 圧縮は PC のパフォーマンスを下げると思っていた。しかし、違うかも知れないという記事を見かけた。

わたしは興味津々で、説明してほしいと彼に頼んだ。そして分かったのは、「システム全体の中でHDDが最も遅いコンポーネントであり、システムを高速化する1つの方法は、HDDに読み書きするデータの量を最小限に抑えることだ」と彼が考えたということだった。圧縮により、HDDに保存されるファイルのサイズが小さくなり、そのおかげでHDDのI/Oが高速化するというわけだ。 From: PCのHDD圧縮は果たして行うべきか否か − TechTargetジャパン

これは面白い。同じことをネットワークでは皆が行っている。サイトからデータをダウンロードする際、データを圧縮するのは常識である。ファイルのみでなく、Web サイトからブラウザへコンテンツをダウンロードする場合でもデータを圧縮することが行われる。また、UNIX ホスト間のデータ転送を行う場合も、圧縮したデータを送った方が効率が良いことが分かっている。

こう考えると HDD 圧縮についても一理あるのかも知れないと思う。ただ、Mac で HDD 圧縮をお手軽に行う方法が分からない。Windows では簡単なのだが。FileVault なら簡単なのだが、暗号化はともかく圧縮はしないと思う。ディスクユーティリティで作成するディスクイメージファイルであれば「圧縮」が選べるのだが、保存先を選ぶなどの作業が必要になるので面倒だ。

何か良い方法は無いか？
