How Crosby's golden goal was celebrated around Canada
// MARCH 2ND, 2010
There have been many YouTube videos floating around showing the moment of ecstasy as the puck whipped through Miller's "5-hole" and smacked the back of the net.
Here's a selection of videos showing how crowds all over Vancouver and Canada celebrated. Enjoy!
Vancouver Down Town
Ever heard an entire city roar before? Well now you can. You might want to skip through to about the 17sec mark for this one... but how cool is it??

Of course there was always going to be some clever devils out there with video editing skills far surpassing my own that were going to put some spine-tingling compilations together for us.
YouTube user Jean-Louis Nguyen is one such user. Jean-Louis, to his credit, has compiled reaction videos for both Team USA's heartbreaking game-tieing goal, and also Crosby's golden goal moment!
Ok, so maybe it didn't come as easily as we all would have hoped. A heart breaking goal by the USA in the final 24.4 seconds of the third period tied things up and stole away the regular time victory we all thought we were going to share.
But in the end Sid "The Kid" Crosby (the guy who's number is on the back of my jersey) pulled out a stunning goal, now forever known as "Crosby's Golden Goal", right when it was needed to put the boys in red and white on top of the Olympic podium, capturing Canada's 14th gold medal and adding to the largest gold medal haul in history, by a single country in the Winter Olympics.

Scenes from Granville Street
I took the game in with friends from the comfort and electric atmosphere of the Vogue Theatre right in the heart of town on Granville Street, with plenty of chaos going on out on the main drag outside (see photos below).
We had an absolute ball and were stoked that we made the last minute decision last night, to attend. When Crosby slotted the decider, the place theatre erupted, and it stayed that way for a VERY LONG time!
Jubilant scnenes inside the Vogue Theatre just seconds after the gold medal winning goal
For me, Canada's player of the game was probably a toss-up between decorated veteran Scott Niedermayer and defenseman Chris Pronger. Mind you Ryan Getzlaf was as consistent and vital as ever, as was Vancouver's very own man between the pipes, Roberto Luongo.
I, like the tens of thousands still hooting and hollering on Robson and Granville, am on a SERIOUS high right now. These Olympics Games have been looming for me since I landed on these shores, and I'm so happy that I was able to take part in them, even if it was only from the sidelines.
Congratulations to Team Canada and ALL those Canadian, and Australian athletes who earned their places on the podium.
Congratulations to all the other athletes that competed over the past 2+ weeks.
Congratulations to all those behind the scenes and the thousands of amazing volunteers that made it all happen, and last but not least, congrats to the city of Vancouver and Whistler Village for showing the world such an amazing time!
What am I going to do with myself tomorrow now...

One down, one to go: Canadian Women’s Hockey GOLD!
// FEBRUARY 25TH, 2010
Thanks to two first period goals by teenage sensation and Olympic debutant Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec, the girls weathered numerous attacks by the US team such as multiple power plays including a critical five-on-three early in the second period.
The gold won tonight brings the consecutive Olympic gold medals for the women's team to 3 after they beat the USA for the top prize back in 2002, and then Sweden in Torino in 2006.
Luckily for the spectators at Canada Hockey Place (GM Place), the medals were presented on-site straight after the game to a very happy bunch of ladies who I am sure will be partying on down town tonight until the wee hours!
One down, one to go. Team Canada (Men) take on Slovakia in a blockbuster semi-final at 6:30pm PST (12:30pm Australian) tomorrow night! It's going to be HUGE!!!

With 3 talented Aussies making the final including current world cup champion Lydia Lassila, inspirational veteran Jacqui Cooper, and teammate Liz Gardner, there was certainly plenty to be confident about while taking on the strong up-and-coming Chinese team.
Keeping us all breathless until the last round of jumps, ultimately the gorgeous Lydia Lassila landed one of her trademark jumps, a difficult triple-flipping, triple-twisting maneuver that had gave her a total score of 214.74, just 7 points ahead of her nearest Chinese opponent and securing Australia's second gold!

Taking Australia's overall tally to three 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic medals (2x gold, 1x silver), it represents Australia's most successful Winter Olympic performance in history and provided Lydia with more than enough ammunition to push the need for better home-soil facilities (reducing the need for athletes to be based outside of Australia full-time for training) and funding for the sport when she spoke with Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.
I'm really proud of Lydia and also Jacqui, who finished a olympic-best 5th place, and Liz (12th). The girls were outstanding and ensured that Australia's historical dominance of the women's circuit for aerial skiing is maintained!

There's more than enough reading and great photography amongst that lot to keep you busy for a morning at least!
Now before I sign off for now, let me just clear something up. The 7 Blogs I have singled out for the Olympics are by no means an exhaustive list.
There's tonnes of other quality Vancouver-based Blogs out there that are pumping out awesome content. Sorry if I have offended anyone by leaving you out this time around, I just don’t have the time in my days to cover you all!
Kudos must go to this likable chap from Russell, Manitoba, simply for doing what I'm sure most of us wouldn't have the balls to do – hurl yourself down a tube of ice, head first, reaching speeds that most of us are used to achieving in our vehicles on wide open highways.
Tonight, Jon Montgomery dug deep and pulled out an incredible 4 heat run out at the Whistler sliding center and in doing so put himself on top of the podium, securing Canada's 4th gold medal. Now here's the bit that I loved... as he headed back into Whistler village, someone thrust a pitcher of beer in his hands and without hesitation and while he was talking to the media, he proceeded to chug the beer as if he'd never tasted the amber nectar before.
Jon's a larrikin, he's Canadian, and he's now the toast of the country!
Later in the day, Team Canada opened their campaign for the most prized gold medals of all (in Canada anyway) – the men's Ice Hockey. Putting on quite the show, Team Canada, assisted by some flawless goal tending by the Vancouver Canuck's own Roberto Luonogo, clinically accounted for Norway with a big 8-0 win. Jarome Iginla and Danny Heatley picked up a pair each while "Sid the Kid" chimed in with 3 assists.

The big win was enough to create quite the celebration within the beer tent at LiveCity Downtown where I was taking in the game with my mates TJ and Adrienne. As we headed back into the center of town, we noticed that the rest of Vancouver seemed to have been watching the game and were taking their happiness into the streets.
The intersection of Robson and Granville Streets was overflowing in a way I don't think I've ever seen before. And this was just a pool game win!!!
