2013 in review by olivia
let's make a list of the positive changes in my life this year:
well i have an entirely new group of friends -- i've become closer with people that i wasn't close with before and started interacting more with diff people and it's just been good. for example: jasmine (my best friend -- ps can you believe we've only been friends since the start of this year???) belen, alyssa, ryan, jake, tabitha, all of the new freshmen in the company, and just ya know it's been v good in the friend department
i became significantly more comfortable with my non-hetero sexual orientation. prior to this year i really wasn't accepting of myself as anything other than straight, despite knowing i wasn't 100% straight. while i still don't label it, i've fully accepted myself (however the thought of telling anyone in my family is still kind of terrifying or just coming out as a whole -- and i find it pretty unnecessary)
i became more educated on social justice issues and other issues regarding the lgbtqia+ community
because of ^^^ i became more of a raging feminist, and i'm extremely proud of that fact
my music taste changed a lot and i think it opened up more and i love it
i reaffirmed my lack of a need for a relationship. prior to getting that whole mess started i wasn't sure i even wanted a relationship, and then i thought i really did but eventually realized hell nope i don't have time to worry about this
i became comfortable with cutting my hair short!!! while it isn't as short as i plan on it being in the future, having my hair short was always a danger zone for me because i felt really secure with my long hair, but i finally grew past that.
i'm sure there's more but those are some main ones that i can think of! i watched a bunch of new tv shows and stuff and found new fandoms and yeah!!! there ya go!!!
i'm probably having a once upon a time marathon tonight so i'll prob post more later or tomorrow
2013
Bought a place for my parents.
Did the Color Run. Ran a 10K.
Ran some more. Recovered from a lot of injuries. Sugar level stabilized after 8 years.
Job hunting with a lot of “almost but not quite”.
Cried a lot. Laughed a lot. May have loved and lived a little less than usual. Survived.
Already excited for 2014 plans.
top 5 books.
I’m not sure I read many books released in 2013 so I’ll do “read in 2013”
1. The Posterchildren A superhero story that follows compelling characters and has the diversity actual superhero comics lack. Cleverly written, believable teenagers, great friendships.
2. Changing Planes This was a collection of sci-fi short stories by Ursula K. Leguin that details the histories of various alternate realities. I found a lot of the concepts fascinating and chilling, like the children genetically engineered to not to sleep who ended up suffering side effects, or the world where everyone had shared dreaming experiences.
3. The Telling also by Ursula K. Leguin, it’s a futuristic scifi story with a queer woc protag, and she escapes the religious fundamentalism that has taken over Earth only to discover a scientific/atheistic fundamentalism has developed on another planet (she suspects it might be in backlash to her planet sending missionaries) and gets involved with a community of fringe rebels. Full of interesting concepts.
4. Personal Statement Turned out to be fairly enjoyable, with an interesting, diverse cast of characters who were all developed and had their own arcs. I really liked the female solidarity in it too, and how the teenagers felt mostly realistic.
5.Heroine Addiction I have yet to finish it, and to be honest, it’s not incredibly well-written i but I am just tickled that it’s about a cranky retired bi superhero girl’s dysfunctional family, and the fact her dad ended up leaving her Mom for his whacko scientist dude arch-nemesis because he realized that their obsession with each other was kind of obviously rooted in sexual attraction. Been waiting for that story my whole life.
