Deep Sea / Deep Space
In this series I moved on from thinking as a designer/illustrator to teaching myself how to paint, how to be expressive, how to feel my art instead of trying to construct images. I took a deep dive into the oceanic depths of my psyche to confront whatever monsters lived there. To me, this deep sea, this primordial soup of pure emotion felt as alien, as unexplored and cold as deep space and I linked them together when naming the series. It was a difficult series to work on, I felt like I was in chronic state of emotional meltdown or dissolution, often struggling with hopelessness. But, regardless of that most of the images I made were about hope and healing and overcoming depression that I experienced in my early 20s.
