So at the beginning of 2015 I posted a little selfie-retrospective of 2014 and just stumbled on it per chance. For me it's quite nice to post these little reminders of how I looked back then, what style I liked, how I did my make-up and hair etc. I can't remember posting this of 2015, but here you are, a little collection of 2016. Turning blonde was definitely the biggest Impact in a long time! :D

Best of 2016: Selfies

A few years ago we had a thing here on reptiblr/sciblr/whatevblryoucallit wherein we summarised our selfies of the year gone by. 2016 was quite an incredible year for me personally, so I wanted to show some of that documented through that most expressive and deep of modern artistic media: selfies.

I started the year in the field in northern Madagascar; the first photo is me on the 1st of January at the point an hour’s walk from Camp where there was occasional cell-phone reception. At the end of January I returned to Germany, and to work. In May I found my first European tree frogs in Germany, not far from my home. In August I heard that I got the funding for my PhD, and in September I went with my partner Ella to the south of France on holiday. Then, in November, four days after my PhD officially started, I returned to the field for five weeks, before finally returning, having a burn-out two weeks of work, and then spending a remarkably relaxing Christmas with Ella and my family. We ended the year finally back at our home in Munich.

There were plenty of things about 2016 that sucked: the political world fell apart, I had quite a few difficulties with some projects and others were just soul-draining, and several personal matters weighed heavily on me at times. But these bright moments shown here, and the dozens of others from throughout the year, remind me that the year was, on the whole, a very good one.

I hope you, too, have managed to survive 2016 with at least some glimmering moments of goodness to outshine the dumpster fire of a year that it was in so, so many respects.

Here’s to a good 2017.
