I Am Legend
Just finished the1954 vampire novel "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson. I'd recommend the book to anyone but don't expect the typical vampire yarn. Although vampires are always lurking around the book is not really about them. It's about loneliness, boredom, and despair. The book is sparsely populated with characters: Neville (our hero), vampires, a dog, and Ruth (an apparently un-infected woman) Neville is the last normal person on Earth. Everyone else including at least dogs have morphed into vampires. Most of the story recounts day to day swings from Neville's euphoria to despair and back again along with his search for the vampire plague's root cause and subsequent discovery of the guilty bacteria. In a short interlude Neville, our hero, spots and captures an un-infected dog. However, the dog is near starvation and has several wounds. The dog dies in short order. Needless to say, Neville's mental state does not improve with Rover's passing on. Near the end he encounters Ruth, one of the undead vampires, masquerading as a frightened, normal human. The undead are founding a new social order. Since Neville has been killing them they of course have decided to do away with him. Ruth is sent out as a scout to gather intelligence. During the course of their meeting he examines her blood sample and discovers the vampire bacteria is mutating but or course he doesn't tell them -- if I had written the book I'd explored this further. The implication is the bacteria will evolve and become immune to the drug much the same as cockroaches became immune to DDT. Maybe he was leaving the door open for a sequel? In the end they capture him and execute him I suppose, but the book does not go that far. We are left with Neville's realization that to them "He is Legend." Note: written and published to "Tumblr" on an iPhone using the "Drafts" app. I've used lots of quotation marks because I have not disovered how to publish "Markup" to "Tumblr" yet.
