2016 Season Part 2

There were many moments during the year, including controversial break downs (Malaysia, Hamilton) and orders from the team (Abu Dhabi, Hamilton).

A quick over look at Malaysia, Hamilton was leading with a huge lead however near the end of the race his engine died. He was disappointed and knew he had to win every race from now on, however his rival would need to only be on the podium to win.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2016

Abu Dhabi is the final race of the year, and Hamilton was not going to give up the championship or the win. Lewis lead the race from pole position, however was closely followed by his team mate and championship rival. It was obvious to many during the race that Hamilton was not going at full pace or what is known as race pace; this was because he knew the only way to win the championship, was for Rosberg to finish further down the pack. Although the other drivers were beginning to get closer to the championship leader, they could not pass him. The reason: where Hamilton was slowing the group, was in the final sector; this part of the track is very tight and is not a usual part for the drivers to overtake. The other competitors were not able to overtake Nico in sector 1 or 2 because of how quick the Mercedes was and he kept receiving DRS (Drag Reduction System) due to how close he was to Hamilton, which helped him keep the gap from 3rd place.

Eventually, on lap 47, Hamilton’s engineer told him:

"Ok, Lewis, this an instruction, we need 45.1 for the win.”

Lewis Hamilton states back:

"I suggest you guys let us race.”

This instruction came due to Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari, gaining on the Mercedes duo and slicing through the field after his pit stop. Hamilton ignored hi engineer, so on lap 51 Paddy Lowe, Technical Director came over the radio: 

“Lewis, this is Paddy. We need you to pick up the pace to win this race. That's an instruction.”

Lewis struck back, probably in anger:

“I’m actually in the lead right now and quite comfortable.”

At some point after this exchange between driver and team, Hamilton had stated that he was losing the championship and can win the race, therefore he wanted to control the pace as he felt he could.

At the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2016, Hamilton crossed the line in 1st however his team mate and championship rival, Nico Rosberg came 2nd and therefore became:

The 2016 Formula 1 World Drivers Champion.

5 days after winning the championship, Nico Rosberg attended the FIA Prize-Giving ceremony, to be properly crown the champion. However, there was a press conference and a pure shock announcement made.

"I have decided to end my Formula 1 career.”

Rosberg had declared he was retiring from Formula 1 after only winning the championship 5 days ago. He shocked the whole motorsport community, during his Facebook Live broadcast the sound of gasping could be heard. He did this because he had achieved his childhood dream and wanted to be closer with his family.

So, Who Will Replace Rosberg At Mercedes?

At the beginning of 2017, we did not know who would be in the 2nd Mercedes car. It was announced Valtteri Bottas will get the “best seat in Formula 1″. It is widely speculated that the deal involved Paddy Lowe moving from the Mercedes team to Williams Martini Racing.
